Quick Buyer Answer

Custom paper bags are folded paper carriers made to order with your branding, from kraft and shopping to luxury and gift formats. The category spans a range of bag types in our catalog — Custom Paper Bags is the hub — where the main formats are kraft, luxury, shopping, gift, rope-handle, flat-handle, die-cut-handle, SOS, takeaway and wine bags. Materials are kraft paper (brown or white), coated art paper, recycled blends and specialty stocks, from 80 to 300 gsm depending on the format. Handles include twisted paper, flat tape, die-cut and rope or ribbon. Printed with flexo, offset CMYK, digital or Pantone, plus foil and embossing on the premium formats, then laminated matte, gloss or soft-touch. MOQ is 50 units for kraft, luxury, shopping, gift and rope-handle; 100 for flat-handle, die-cut, takeaway and wine; 500 for SOS. White samples take 5–7 business days, printed samples 7–10 days, production 7–10 days after approval (wine 7–12). We ship DDP to 50+ countries. For a quote, contact us with your bag type, dimensions, quantity and handle.

How Bag Types Relate

The bag names in the catalog describe different dimensions, and they overlap rather than being mutually exclusive types. Kraft describes a material (uncoated kraft paper). Luxury describes a specification and positioning (coated art paper with lamination, edge painting, ribbon or rope handles). Shopping describes a use case (the general-purpose retail carrier). Gift describes an occasion (personalized gifting). Handle names (rope, flat, die-cut) describe a structural feature. So a single physical bag can fall into several categories at once: a rope-handle bag made from coated art paper with matte lamination is both a rope-handle bag and a luxury bag aiming at shopping/gift. A kraft bag with a flat handle is both a kraft bag and a flat-handle bag and, in a food setting, a takeaway bag. Do not treat these as discrete alternatives — decide the dimension that matters most (material, positioning, use, or handle) and let the other labels follow. See the full set of formats on our Custom Paper Bags hub.

Paper Bag Type Comparison

The table below positions the main formats by classification, handle, best use, relative cost, branding level and shipping efficiency. Relative cost is a qualitative Low / Medium / High / Premium comparison — we do not publish USD prices per type because every bag is custom.

Materials

The paper substrate sets the bag’s look, feel, print quality, strength and cost. Here are the materials we actually manufacture from.
MaterialAppearancePrintabilityRelative CostTypical UseSustainability Notes
Kraft paper (brown/white)Visible natural fiber; uncoatedGood for 1–3 color flexo; the brown base affects color renderingLowCoffee, bakery, grocery, takeaway, craft retailUnbleached kraft signals natural; recyclable in standard paper streams — whether it is eco depends on fiber source, coating and handle

Recycled blends (100% post-consumer)Natural to slightly mottledGood; slight fiber varianceSlightly higher than virgin kraftEco-positioned retail and giftingRecycled content is a verifiable credit; still confirm certification and handle recyclability
Grease-resistant kraft (food-grade)Kraft look, oil-barrier propertyFood-safe flexo/offset inksMedium–HighTakeaway, bakery, oily snacksPE-free and PLA-lined options maintain recyclability vs PE-lined
Specialty stocks (Curious, Fedrigoni, Gmund)Tactile, colored, metallic or pearlescentOften needs no printing; takes foilPremiumLuxury bags, wine, high-end giftingDepends on stock; FSC-certified options available
Kraft and coated art paper are the two poles: kraft is uncoated and natural, coated art paper is bright and highly printable. For material selection logic, see our Kraft Paper and Coated Paper material pages and the material selection guide.

GSM & Paper Weight

GSM (grams per square metre) is the weight of the paper per unit area — it drives feel, rigidity, strength and cost together, but higher GSM is not automatically the right answer. A heavier paper feels more substantial and resists sagging under load, but it raises material cost and can reduce how many bags fit per press sheet. The real GSM ranges across our formats: kraft 80–150 gsm (with 100 gsm the reported baseline and 120–150 for grocery and hampers), shopping/flat-handle/SOS/takeaway 100–200 gsm, gift 120–200 gsm, wine 157–250 gsm, luxury and die-cut 200–300 gsm (coated art paper), and rope-handle 200–300 gsm coated art paper or 250–350 gsm kraft. Reinforced base cards run 350–600 gsm. We do not publish a GSM–to–strict carrying-capacity chart, because real load strength depends on paper grade, dimensions, handle and bottom construction as much as GSM. Tell us your target load and we recommend a paper weight rather than assuming from GSM alone.

Handle Comparison

The handle is one of the most compared features of a paper bag. Only these handle options exist in the catalog, compared below.
Handle TypeAppearanceConstructionRelative CostCommon Use
Twisted paperTwisted paper cord loopsTwisted paper anchored through the bag topMedium (standard)Shopping, gift, kraft, coffee and bakery
Flat (tape) handleFlat paper stripFlat strip glued or stapled inside the topLower than twistedFood, grocery, SOS, takeaway, high-volume retail
Die-cut handleCut-out slot in the bag topNo separate handle material; cut into the body (oval, rectangular, custom)Low–MediumTrade shows, events, eco minimal, cost-down retail
Rope handleCotton, jute or twisted paper cord loopsAnchored through reinforced eyeletsHighHampers, bottles, wine, heavy apparel, boutique
Ribbon handleSatin or grosgrain loopsTied to the top; premium hardwarePremiumLuxury, gift, branded retail
Bag strength cannot be judged from the handle alone — the same handle on different paper or without reinforcement behaves differently. Rope handles distribute weight through eyelets and suit heavy loads; die-cut handles are the lightest and suit light loads. Handle choice interacts with paper GSM, base reinforcement and bottom construction. See Custom Rope Handle Paper Bags, Flat Handle, and Die-Cut Handle product pages.

Printing

Print runs depend on bag material and quantity. Flexo in 1–3 colors is the direct, cost-effective method on kraft and for line-art logos; offset CMYK suits full-color photographic print, mainly on white kraft or coated art paper; digital handles 50–500 unit runs with no plate setup; Pantone spot colors match brand-critical colors (logo reds, brand blues); metallic inks add shimmer without foil-stamp cost; and food-safe inks are used on takeaway and food-contact kraft. Color rendering differs by substrate: on uncoated brown kraft the paper color shows through, so brights and gradients render more muted than on a white or coated surface. Coated art paper holds CMYK, Pantone, foil and lamination cleanly; kraft is best treated as a natural base. Branded printing with a logo and color guidance is covered under our Custom Packaging with Logo solution, and print method logic in the CMYK vs Pantone printing guide.

Finishes

Finishes add protection and tactile premium, and they apply differently by material — not every substrate suits every finish. Lamination (matte, gloss or soft-touch) protects the print and changes the feel; matte is the premium default on coated art paper, soft-touch a velvet-feel signal for fragrances and watches. Hot-stamp foil (gold, silver, rose gold, holographic) is used for luxury marks and monograms. Embossing & debossing add a debossed or raised brand mark. Edge painting color-matches the cut edges of a luxury bag. A printed interior adds a brand pattern visible inside the bag. Ribbon handles act as a closure and a finish on luxury and gift formats. A thin, uncoated kraft bag is not a natural substrate for heavy foil or soft-touch lamination — those finishes suit coated art paper. On kraft, flexo print with a simple foil mark or a die-cut handle is more effective. Confirm the finish against the material rather than assuming every finish is available on every bag. Foil and soft-touch details are on our Foil Stamping and Soft-Touch Lamination finish pages.

Bag Strength

What determines paper bag strength? Strength is a system property, not a single number. The factors are: paper grade (kraft vs coated, bleached vs unbleached), GSM (heavier paper resists sagging), dimensions (larger bags carry more material and more load), handle and handle attachment (twisted and rope handles anchor differently than a die-cut slot), reinforcement (base cards of 350–600 gsm and gusseted side panels for heavy loads), bottom construction (block-bottom SOS vs flat-bottom folding), and product weight. Because we have no published load test that maps GSM to a strict kilogram capacity, we do not state load figures. Instead we quote against your product weight and recommend the paper, reinforcement and bottom construction. A heavy product usually needs a stiffer paper, a reinforced base card, and a handle that anchors through eyelets (rope) rather than a die-cut slot. Test prototypes against your heaviest item before production.

Cost: What Drives the Price

Pricing is custom per bag because the configuration is never static. The factors that move the price are: dimensions (larger bags use more paper and lower units per press sheet — a hamper bag costs well more than a small coffee bag), paper & GSM (a heavier 120–150 gsm kraft adds roughly 15–30% to material cost over 100 gsm; coated art paper and specialty stocks add more), quantity (unit cost drops from 50 to 5,000+ units as setup, plates and handle tooling amortize), printing (digital at low volume, flexo from ~1,000 for 1–3 color, offset from 1,000 for full color), handle (flat is cheaper than twisted; die-cut adds tooling; ribbon and rope add per-unit hardware), reinforcement (base cards and gussets add cost but are needed for heavy loads), finishes (lamination, foil, embossing each add a pass), and shipping (bags ship flat, so freight scales with bag size and quantity rather than pre-assembled volume). We do not publish a flat USD list price; we show unit cost at several quantities in a tailored quote within 24 hours. For the full pricing mechanics, see our Custom Paper Bag Cost guide and our Packaging Pricing Center.

MOQ, SKU & Unit Cost

The MOQ differs by bag format, so there is no single “paper bag MOQ.” Verified minimums are: 50 units per SKU for kraft, luxury, shopping, gift and rope-handle bags; 100 units for flat-handle, die-cut-handle, takeaway and wine bags; and 500 units for SOS bags. MOQ is applied per SKU, so multiple designs or sizes raise the total order even if each is small. Unit cost and MOQ trade off directly: at 50–100 units you pay a digital-print premium with no plate setup; from around 1,000 units flexo (kraft) or offset (white/coated) becomes cheaper per unit; beyond 5,000 dedicated tooling and handle tooling bring unit cost down further, and SOS is the most cost-effective carrier in the catalog at 10,000+ units. If you need fewer than MOQ, order samples or a small pilot — sample fees are credited against production. For the general framework see our Packaging MOQ Guide.

Decision Matrix: How to Choose

Work through your priorities, then pick the direction that fits. Not every answer points to the luxury bag.
Buyer PrioritySuggested DirectionWhy
Natural / eco appearanceKraft bagUnbleached kraft carries the natural, craft signal and food-safety
Premium boutique retailLuxury bagCoated art paper, lamination, ribbon or rope and edge painting signal premium

These are starting points — confirm the exact paper, GSM, handle and reinforcement against your product weight, quantity and budget.

Sustainability Claims

A paper bag is not automatically eco-friendly because it is made of paper, and kraft is not automatically “green.” Whether a bag is more sustainable depends on: fiber source (virgin vs recycled; FSC-certified sourcing, license A000511), certification (FSC chain-of-custody, recycled content claims), coating & lamination (uncoated kraft and PE-free linings are easier to recycle than heavy coatings or PE-lined film), handle (a die-cut handle with no hardware is fully recyclable in standard paper streams, versus rope or ribbon hardware), right-sizing (a bag that fits the product uses material efficiently), and local recycling infrastructure (whether the bag is actually collected and recycled in the destination market). We avoid absolute claims such as “100% eco-friendly”, “zero impact” or “fully sustainable.” Recycled content and FSC certification are verifiable; coating, lamination and handle choice determine whether the bag can be recycled in practice. For the certified materials we hold, see our Recycled Paper and Sustainability pages.

Shipping & Logistics

Paper bags ship flat-packed, which keeps freight volume low versus pre-assembled packaging. The bag is folded flat and nested in batches inside master cartons, so the freight cost scales with bag size, handle and quantity rather than the assembled volume. The factors that move shipping cost are bag dimensions (larger bags use more carton volume), handle (rope or ribbon handles change how bags nest and pack), quantity, master carton size and packing density, and destination. We ship DDP to 50+ countries with no surprise customs fees. Air freight runs about 5–7 days; sea freight 28–35 days is the standard, most economical choice. Rush production is available on some runs. For the full door-to-door mechanics, see our DDP Shipping Guide.

Box + Bag Combinations

Bags and boxes answer different moments, and buying both can make sense — but it is not always justified. A box (rigid gift box, folding carton, or setup box) presents and protects a product on the counter or at the shelf; a bag carries multiple items after purchase and carries the brand out of the store. The pairing is useful when a customer buys at retail, makes a gift purchase, or buys from a boutique or jewelry counter where the box holds the product and the bag carries it home. This pairing applies to retail, jewelry, cosmetics and gift. When the product itself is delivered in a premium box, a matching bag completes the handover moment. When the product is light and sold online, or the transaction is pure ecommerce, a bag may add little. Combine box and bag only when the use case genuinely needs both — the bag should earn its cost. For the box side, see our Custom Rigid Boxes and Gift Packaging pages.

Frequently asked

Custom paper bags are folded, printable paper carriers made to order with your branding.

They come in kraft, shopping, luxury, gift, rope-handle, flat-handle, die-cut, SOS, takeaway and wine formats, in papers from 80 to 300 gsm with twisted, flat, die-cut, rope or ribbon handles. MOQ is 50–500 units depending on format; printed samples take 7–10 days.

Kraft, luxury, shopping, gift, rope-handle, flat-handle, die-cut-handle, SOS, takeaway and wine bags.

Kraft and luxury are the material/spec poles; shopping and gift describe use; handle names describe structure. They overlap — a bag can be kraft, flat-handle and takeaway at once. Browse the full set on our <a href="/custom-paper-bags/">Custom Paper Bags</a> hub.

50 units for kraft/luxury/shopping/gift/rope; 100 for flat/die-cut/takeaway/wine; 500 for SOS.

MOQ is applied per SKU, so multiple designs raise the total. At 50–100 units digital printing avoids plate setup; from ~1,000 units flexo or offset cuts unit cost. Below MOQ, order samples or a pilot with sample fees credited against production.

Pricing is custom and depends on dimensions, paper, GSM, quantity, printing, handle, reinforcement, finishes and shipping.

We do not publish a flat USD list price. Unit cost drops as quantity rises from 50 to 5,000+. You see unit cost at several quantities in a tailored quote within 24 hours.

White or brown kraft, coated art paper, or recycled blends, typically 100–190 gsm.

Uncoated kraft is the natural, cost-effective choice; coated art paper (157–190 gsm sweet spot) gives the brightest print and premium feel. Backing a heavier load may require a stiffer paper and a reinforced base.

It depends on load and feel — rope for heavy or premium, twisted for standard, flat for food/volume, die-cut for minimal eco.

Rope handles anchor through reinforced eyelets and suit heavy loads and boutique. Flat handles are comfortable and cost-effective. Die-cut handles use no hardware and are the most recyclable. Match the handle to the paper and load rather than picking “best.”

Often yes, but it depends on coating, lamination, handle and local recycling infrastructure.

An uncoated, unbleached kraft bag with a die-cut handle is readily recyclable in standard paper streams. Rope or ribbon hardware, heavy coatings and PE lining can reduce recyclability. We avoid “fully eco-friendly” claims and flag the fiber source, certification and handle instead.

Yes — hot-stamp foil works well on coated art paper and on premium bags.

Gold, silver, rose gold and holographic foils suit luxury marks and monograms. On thin uncoated kraft, a simple foil mark is more effective than a heavy coverage. Confirm the finish against the material first.

Strength depends on paper grade, GSM, dimensions, handle, attachment, reinforcement and bottom construction.

We do not publish a GSM-to-kilogram chart because real strength depends on the whole system. Heavier paper, a reinforced base card (350–600 gsm), gusseted panels and an eyelet-anchored rope handle carry more. Test against your heaviest item.

Yes — we ship DDP to 50+ countries.

Bags ship flat-packed to save freight. Air runs 5–7 days; sea 28–35 days is standard and most economical. DDP covers USA, Canada, Germany, France, UK, Italy, Spain, Australia, Japan, South Korea, Singapore and Malaysia with no surprise customs fees.
