Custom Gift Boxes

Ribbon-tied rigid gift boxes engineered for the moment the lid comes off — seasonal launches, corporate hampers, wedding favors, and DTC gift sets that earn the unboxing.

Quick answer

Custom gift boxes are rigid or semi-rigid paperboard boxes built for gifting contexts — holiday collections, corporate hampers, wedding favors, and DTC gift sets. They pair a greyboard structure with printed wraps, ribbon closures, custom inserts, and personalization, so the presentation is part of the gift rather than just a container. MOQ starts at 50 units. Lead time is 10–15 business days after sample approval. Sample fees are credited against your first production order. DDP shipping to 50+ countries including USA, Canada, Germany, France, UK, Italy, Spain, Australia, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia — no surprise customs fees.

Overview

What it is, and when to use it.

Custom gift boxes are paperboard boxes built specifically for gifting contexts — where the presentation is part of the gift, not just a container for it. Each box is built from 1.2–2.5mm greyboard — with recycled-content and FSC-certified options — wrapped in art paper, specialty stock, or textured paper, then dressed with the details that signal "this was made to be given": satin or grosgrain ribbon closures, foil-stamped wordmarks, custom EVA foam inserts that hold multiple items in place, velvet flocking, and hang tags or gift cards. The format spans lift-off lids, two-piece set-ups, drawer boxes, and hinged lids — chosen to match the product, the occasion, and the fulfillment model. What makes a gift box different from a standard rigid or magnetic box is the use-case, not the structure. A gift box can be built as a rigid set-up box, a collapsible magnetic box, or a folding carton — what defines it is the gifting context: seasonal storytelling, personalization, multi-item inserts, and a presentation that photographs. That means gift box projects almost always carry more hand-assembly than a plain shipper — ribbons to tie, inserts to fit, tissue to fold — and the unit-cost curve reflects that labor. The payoff is a box that turns a product into a gift and an unboxing into a moment worth sharing. We manufacture custom gift boxes in low MOQ runs starting at 50 units per SKU, with white samples in 5–7 business days and printed samples in 7–10 days. Every project runs on a dedicated production line in our FSC-certified facility in Foshan, China, with hand QC at the packing stage. Common applications include holiday and seasonal collections, corporate gifting and hampers, wedding and event favors, DTC gift sets, luxury food and beverage hampers, PR and influencer gifting, and anniversary or milestone gifts — any context where the box carries the emotional weight of the occasion.

Buyer's decision framework

When to choose custom gift boxes — and when not to.

Gift boxes are the right call when the presentation is part of the gift — ribbon, insert, seasonal storytelling, personalization. They are the wrong call when you need the lowest possible unit cost, a flat-shipped ecommerce container, or a retail-shelf-ready carton. Walk through these four questions before you commit.

  1. 1

Is the box part of the gift — or just a container for it?

If the presentation drives the gift's perceived value (holiday, wedding, corporate, PR, anniversary), a gift box earns its cost — the ribbon, the insert, and the foil wordmark are what make a product feel given rather than shipped. If the box only protects the product in transit and gets recycled in five minutes, a corrugated mailer does the job at a fraction of the unit cost.

  2. 2

How many items go inside, and do they need an insert?

Single-item gifts can use a simple lift-off lid with no insert. Multi-item gift sets — hampers, curated assortments, "build-a-box" configurations — need a custom insert (EVA foam, card divider, blister) to hold items in place and present them cleanly. That insert engineering is where a gift box format pays off. If you ship one SKU per box with no presentation requirement, a mailer or folding carton is simpler and cheaper.

  3. 3

What is your target unit cost?

Gift boxes sit between corrugated mailers and hand-built rigid set-up boxes. At 1,000 units expect to pay more than a mailer, less than a fully bespoke rigid hamper — and ribbon, insert, and personalization add per-unit cost on top. If your retail price is under $25 and packaging is invisible in your margin, a folding carton or mailer will serve better. If the box is the gift, the gift box is the sweet spot.

  4. 4

Is this a seasonal launch or a year-round SKU?

Seasonal gift boxes (holiday, Lunar New Year, Valentine's, Mother's Day) justify a higher unit cost because the unboxing drives gift perception and social sharing — the box is part of the occasion. Year-round high-volume SKUs may suit a folding carton instead, since the gift box's hand-assembly cost compounds at scale. Gift boxes shine when the design is part of the occasion, not when they are a commodity shipping container.

Materials

Board & paper options

  • 1200–2500 gsm greyboardThe structural core. Heavier grades (1800–2500) suit large hampers and multi-item gift sets; lighter grades (1200–1500) keep small favor boxes from feeling bulky. Recycled-content and FSC-certified options available.
  • Art paper wrap (128–300 gsm)The baseline wrap for printed gift boxes. Takes CMYK, Pantone, foil, and lamination cleanly. 157 gsm is the sweet spot for most seasonal collections.
  • Specialty paper (Curious, Fedrigoni, Gmund)For gift boxes where the paper itself is the statement — tactile, colored, or metallic stocks that need no printing. Popular for wedding and luxury corporate gifting.
  • Textured stocks (linen, leather, kraft)Adds a tactile surface that photographs well. Linen suits wedding and cosmetics gifts; leather-look suits corporate and milestone gifts; kraft suits eco-positioned hampers.
  • FSC-certified wrap papersRequired if your brand makes a sustainability claim on-pack or in seasonal marketing. We supply FSC-certified wraps and chain-of-custody documentation.
  • Velvet flocking & fabric inlayInterior lining that signals luxury the moment the lid comes off. Used for jewelry, watch, and fragrance gift boxes where the inside is photographed as much as the outside.

Printing & finishes

How it gets dressed

Printing

  • Offset CMYKRecommended for 500+ units and full-color seasonal artwork. Lowest per-unit cost at volume.
  • Pantone spot colorsRecommended for brand-critical color matches (logo reds, brand blues, seasonal palettes). Essential when CMYK cannot reproduce a corporate color.
  • Digital printRecommended for 50–200 unit runs and seasonal market tests. No plate setup, fast turnaround, ideal for validating a gift concept before committing to volume.
  • LetterpressRecommended for wedding, stationery-led, and luxury gift boxes where a debossed tactile print signals craft. Slower and costlier than offset, but unmatched for perceived value.
  • White ink on dark wrapsRecommended for matte black, navy, or deep-colored gift wraps where CMYK alone cannot print light text, names, or dates.
  • Litho laminationRecommended for full-wrap coverage — the printed sheet wraps the entire box exterior including edges. Standard for gift boxes with all-over seasonal patterns or photography.

Finishes

  • Soft-touch lamination (velvet feel)
  • Matte or gloss lamination
  • Foil stamping (gold, silver, rose gold, holographic)
  • Embossing & debossing
  • Spot UV on matte grounds
  • Satin & grosgrain ribbon closures (60+ colors)
  • Velvet flocking & fabric inlay
  • Custom hang tags & gift cards

Ordering & pricing

MOQ, lead time, and what drives the unit cost.

Every box is custom — there is no flat price list. Here is what you need to plan around, and what we will confirm in your tailored quote within 24 hours.

MOQ & sampling

Our standard MOQ for custom gift boxes is 50 units per SKU — low enough to test a seasonal collection or a one-off corporate gifting run without committing to volume. At 50 units we run digital printing, which avoids plate costs. From 500 units upward, offset printing becomes more economical. Gift boxes carry more hand-assembly than a mailer or folding carton (ribbons, inserts, fabric inlay), so the unit-cost curve is steeper at low volume and flattens from 1,000 units. Sample fees are credited against your first production order.

Lead time

Sampling: white sample in 5–7 business days, printed and finished sample (with ribbon and insert) in 7–10 days. Production: 10–15 business days after sample approval, depending on quantity, insert complexity, and finish count. Shipping: 10–25 days DDP to 50+ countries, depending on destination and whether air or sea freight is chosen. Total door-to-door timeline: 3–5 weeks for most orders. Rush production is available on request — we can compress to 8 business days for an expedite fee, subject to finish complexity.

How to read pricing

Final pricing is confirmed in your tailored quote within 24 hours. We do not publish a flat price list because every gift box is custom — but we will always show the unit cost at 50, 100, 500, 1,000, and 5,000 units so you can see the volume curve before committing.

What affects the unit cost

Seven factors that move the quote.

  • Order quantity

Unit cost drops sharply from 50 to 1,000 units as setup, tooling, and insert-mold costs amortize. Beyond 1,000, savings continue but flatten.

  • Box size

Larger gift boxes and hampers use more greyboard, wrap paper, and insert material, and lower the number of units per press sheet. A 420×320×150mm corporate hamper costs several times a 100×100×40mm favor box.

  • Materials

Standard 1200 gsm greyboard with 157 gsm art paper is the baseline. Specialty wraps (Fedrigoni, Curious, Gmund), textured stocks, and velvet or fabric inlay add to material cost.

  • Printing method

Digital print is economical at 50–200 units. Offset CMYK and Pantone spot become cheaper per unit from 500 units. Letterpress adds a setup cost per color and suits luxury and wedding gift boxes.

  • Finishes

Soft-touch lamination, foil stamping, embossing, and spot UV each add a pass. A gift box with all four can cost measurably more than a plain laminated equivalent.

  • Ribbons, inserts & hardware

Satin or grosgrain ribbon closures, custom EVA foam inserts, card dividers, and hang tags are per-unit costs unique to gift packaging. Custom insert tooling is a one-time fee amortized across the run.

  • Assembly & fulfillment

Pre-assembled delivery (with tissue pre-folded inside) saves your 3PL handling time but adds assembly cost at our factory. Flat-shipped gift boxes lower freight volume but require assembly at your fulfillment center. Choose based on your 3PL's labor model.

Real project

How a DTC tea brand turned a holiday gift box into a year-round SKU.

Custom Gift Boxes real project example
Client
Direct-to-consumer premium tea brand (US, seasonal launch)
Challenge
A DTC premium tea brand needed a holiday gift box that could hold three tea tins, an infuser, and a story card, photograph for social, and ship from their 3PL without adding assembly labor. Off-the-shelf gift boxes looked generic and did not fit the tin dimensions; fully bespoke rigid hampers exceeded the target unit cost.
Format chosen
Two-piece rigid gift box with lift-off lid, 2mm greyboard, deep green art paper wrap, soft-touch lamination, gold foil wordmark, satin ribbon closure, and a custom EVA foam insert with three tin cavities plus an infuser slot. Shipped pre-assembled with tissue pre-folded inside so the 3PL could fulfill with no extra handling.
Result
The holiday collection sold through its first run faster than projected. The brand reordered for Lunar New Year within weeks and adopted the gift box format as a year-round gifting SKU rather than a one-off seasonal line, adding two new assortments on the same template.

50 units.

Our standard MOQ for fully custom gift boxes is 50 units per SKU. At 50 units we use digital printing, which avoids plate setup costs and lets you test a seasonal concept or a one-off corporate gifting run without committing to volume. From 500 units, offset printing becomes more economical per unit.

Satin, grosgrain, twill, printed ribbon, or magnetic closure.

Choose from a library of satin, grosgrain, and twill ribbons in 60+ colors, or specify a custom-printed ribbon with your brand or message. For boxes that need to ship flat and assemble in seconds, we offer hidden magnetic closures instead of ribbon. Ribbon-tied boxes suit wedding, luxury, and corporate gifting; magnetic closures suit DTC gift sets that ship from a 3PL.

Both — choose based on your fulfillment model.

Gift boxes can ship flat in protective sleeves (lower freight volume, assembly at your 3PL) or pre-assembled with tissue pre-folded inside (no assembly labor at your fulfillment center, but higher freight volume). For ribbon-tied and insert-fitted gift boxes, pre-assembly at our factory is often faster than 3PL hand-assembly. We will recommend the right model based on your run size and fulfillment setup.

Gift box is the use-case; rigid is the structure.

"Gift box" describes the gifting context — seasonal, personalized, multi-item, presentation-led — not a single structural format. A gift box can be built as a rigid set-up box, a collapsible magnetic box, or a folding carton. Rigid set-up boxes (1.5–3mm greyboard, hand-built, pre-assembled) are the most premium gift box format. Magnetic boxes ship flat and snap together. Folding cartons suit lower-cost retail gift sets. We help you choose the structure that matches the occasion, the product, and the unit-cost target.

White sample 5–7 days, production 10–15 days.

After design sign-off, a white sample (uncut, unprinted) is produced in 5–7 business days. A printed and finished sample with ribbon and insert follows in 7–10 days. Production runs 10–15 business days after sample approval, depending on quantity, insert complexity, and finish count — gift boxes with custom EVA inserts and ribbon closures take longer than a plain laminated box. Total door-to-door: 3–5 weeks for most orders.

Yes — foil stamping, variable data printing, or custom-printed ribbon.

Personalization is a core gift-box feature. For names, dates, or short messages we use foil stamping (gold, silver, rose gold) or variable-data digital printing, which lets each box in a run carry a different name — ideal for wedding favors and corporate gifting. Custom-printed ribbon with a brand, recipient name, or message is also available. Variable-data printing adds a setup pass; foil personalization is quoted per design.

Yes — EVA foam, card dividers, and blister inserts.

Multi-item gift sets and hampers need an insert to hold items in place during shipping and presentation. We make custom EVA foam inserts (die-cut cavities for tins, bottles, or electronics), card dividers (for assortments and food hampers), and blister or pulp inserts (for eco-positioned gifts). Insert tooling is a one-time fee amortized across the run. Send us the dimensions of each item and we will engineer the insert layout.

Yes — both.

The greyboard core is recyclable in standard paper streams. Ribbons, magnets, and fabric inlays should be removed for cleanest recycling — we design gift boxes so these elements separate easily. Many customers reuse gift boxes as keepsake storage, and the format is well-suited to refill systems. For sustainability claims on-pack, request FSC-certified wraps and water-based inks at quoting stage and we will include chain-of-custody documentation.
