Overview

What it is, and when to use it.

Custom shopping bags are the general-purpose paper bag format that spans boutique retail, apparel, gifting, trade shows, events, and everyday retail. Each bag is built from white kraft, brown kraft, coated art paper, or recycled blends — typically 100–190 gsm — printed flexo, offset, or digital, with twisted paper handles, flat tape handles, die-cut handles, or rope handles. The format sits between kraft bags (eco & food) and luxury bags (boutique premium): shopping bags cover the broad middle, from mid-tier boutique to event swag to retail chain. What makes a shopping bag different from a kraft bag or a luxury bag is the breadth of the format. Kraft bags are uncoated and eco-positioned. Luxury bags are coated, laminated, edge-painted, and finished with ribbon or rope. Shopping bags cover every combination in between: coated art paper with twisted paper handles for mid-tier boutique, white kraft with hot stamp foil for event swag, brown kraft with die-cut handles for trade shows. That makes the shopping bag the most flexible format in the bag family — the right call when the bag needs to carry, present, and reuse without committing to either the eco or the luxury end of the spectrum. We manufacture custom shopping bags in low MOQ runs starting at 50 units per SKU, with printed samples in 5–7 business days and production in 10–15 days. Every project runs on a dedicated production line in our FSC-certified facility in Foshan, China. Common applications include retail stores, boutique apparel, trade shows and events, conference swag, gifting, seasonal collections, and market tests — any context where the bag carries a brand at the moment of handover or reuse.

Buyer's decision framework

When to choose custom shopping bags — and when not to.

Shopping bags are the right call when the bag needs to carry a brand across retail, events, and gifting without committing to either the eco or the luxury end of the spectrum. They are the wrong call when the bag is purely a commodity container or a boutique keepsake. Walk through these four questions before you commit.

  1. 1

Is the bag a versatile carrier — or committed to one end of the spectrum?

If the bag spans retail, trade shows, events, and gifting, a shopping bag covers the broad middle with white kraft, brown kraft, or coated art paper. If the bag is committed to eco and food, a kraft bag is the right positioning. If the bag is committed to boutique keepsake, a luxury bag delivers the premium signal.

  2. 2

What is your target unit cost?

Shopping bags sit in the middle of the bag family — above kraft and retail, below luxury. If the bag is a versatile carrier that gets reused a few times, shopping is the right economics. If the bag is disposable, kraft is cheaper. If the bag is a keepsake, luxury is justified.

  3. 3

What handle and reinforcement does the load need?

Twisted paper handles with a 350 gsm base card are rated for 5–8kg — fine for most retail and apparel. For hampers and trade show swag, upgrade to 600 gsm base card. For boutique apparel, rope handles add a premium signal. For trade shows, die-cut handles keep the unit cost low.

  4. 4

Does the bag need to photograph for social or events?

Shopping bags photograph well across retail, trade show, and event contexts — white kraft with foil or coated art paper with lamination both deliver visual impact. For gifting and boutique contexts where the bag is part of a luxury moment, a luxury bag with edge painting and ribbon handles delivers the premium feel that a shopping bag cannot.

Materials

Board & paper options

  • White kraft (100–150 gsm)The versatile default — brighter than brown kraft for cleaner print, with the kraft structure and FSC chain-of-custody. Pairs with twisted paper or die-cut handles.
  • Brown kraft (100–150 gsm)The eco-positioned alternative — unbleached natural fiber. Pairs with water-based inks and twisted paper handles. Common for trade shows and eco-positioned retail.
  • Coated art paper (157–190 gsm)The mid-tier boutique choice — smooth coated surface for sharper CMYK and foil. Pairs with lamination, twisted paper handles, or rope handles. The step up from kraft.
  • Recycled blends (100% post-consumer)For brands with a circular-economy positioning. Slightly lower brightness and tear strength than virgin kraft; pairs with reinforced base cards.
  • FSC-certified boardRequired if your brand makes a sustainability claim on-pack. We supply FSC-certified kraft and coated stocks with chain-of-custody documentation.
  • Reinforced base card (350–600 gsm)A fitted base card that distributes weight and prevents the bag from bowing. Standard for retail and gifting; upgraded to 600 gsm for heavier items.

Printing & finishes

How it gets dressed

Printing

  • Flexo (1–3 colors)Recommended for 1,000+ unit runs with simple line art, logos, or single-color floods. Lowest per-unit cost at volume; water-based inks are eco-friendly.
  • Offset CMYKRecommended for 500+ units and full-color photographic artwork on white kraft or coated art paper. Sharper than flexo, better for brand-critical prints.
  • Digital printRecommended for 50–500 unit runs and market tests. No plate setup, fast turnaround, ideal for validating a bag design or a seasonal collection before committing to volume.
  • Hot stamp foilRecommended for premium retail brands and event swag. Gold, silver, rose gold, and custom Pantone-matched foils. Adds a one-pass setup cost per foil color.
  • Pantone spot colorsRecommended for brand-critical color matches on white kraft or coated art paper. Essential when CMYK cannot reproduce a corporate color.
  • Printed inside (optional)Recommended for branded inside-the-bag presentation. The interior print carries a brand pattern, color cue, or surprise message visible when the bag is opened.

Finishes

  • Twisted paper handle (standard)
  • Flat tape handle
  • Die-cut handle (no hardware)
  • Rope handle (cotton or jute)
  • Matte or gloss lamination
  • Hot stamp foil (gold, silver, rose gold)
  • Reinforced base card (350–600 gsm)
  • Gusseted side panels

Ordering & pricing

MOQ, lead time, and what drives the unit cost.

Every bag is custom — there is no flat price list. Here is what you need to plan around, and what we will confirm in your tailored quote within 24 hours.

MOQ & sampling

Our standard MOQ for custom shopping bags is 50 units per SKU — low enough to test a design, a seasonal collection, or a trade show giveaway without committing to volume. At 50 units we use digital printing, which avoids plate costs. From 1,000 units, flexo printing becomes more economical per unit. From 5,000 units, dedicated tooling brings the unit cost down further. Sample fees are credited against your first production order.

Lead time

Sampling: printed sample in 5–7 business days. Production: 10–15 business days after sample approval, depending on quantity, printing method, and handle type. Shipping: 10–25 days DDP to 50+ countries, depending on destination and whether air or sea freight is chosen. Total door-to-door timeline: 3–5 weeks for most orders. Rush production is available — we can compress to 8 business days for digital runs.

How to read pricing

Final pricing is confirmed in your tailored quote within 24 hours. We do not publish a flat price list because every shopping bag is custom — but we will always show the unit cost at 50, 100, 500, 1,000, and 5,000 units so you can see the volume curve before committing.

What affects the unit cost

Seven factors that move the quote.

  • Order quantity

Unit cost drops sharply from 50 to 5,000 units as setup, plates, and handle tooling amortize. Beyond 5,000, savings continue but flatten.

  • Paper grade & weight

Standard 120 gsm white kraft is the baseline. Coated art paper (157–190 gsm) adds 30–60%. Heavier kraft (150 gsm) for heavier items adds 15–25%. Recycled blends are comparable to virgin kraft.

  • Bag size

Larger bags use more paper and lower the number of units per press sheet. A 500×180×520mm XL hamper bag costs roughly 3× a 220×100×280mm small boutique bag.

  • Printing method

Digital is economical at 50–500 units. Flexo is cheapest from 1,000 units for 1–3 color line art. Offset CMYK is cheapest from 1,000 units for full-color on coated art paper. Foil adds a setup cost per color.

  • Finishes

Lamination, foil, and gusseted side panels each add a pass. A bag with all three can cost measurably more than a plain kraft equivalent.

  • Handles

Twisted paper handles are the standard. Flat tape handles are cheaper. Die-cut handles add tooling. Rope handles (cotton or jute) add per-unit hardware cost.

  • Reinforcements

Reinforced base cards (350–600 gsm) and gusseted side panels add per-unit cost but are required for heavier loads. Folded top edges add a clean finish for boutique shopping bags.

Real project

How a snack brand rolled out a trade show shopping bag that doubled as a retail bag.

Custom Shopping Bags real project example
Client
Direct-to-consumer snack brand (US, trade show & retail)
Challenge
A DTC snack brand was exhibiting at a trade show and needed a giveaway bag that would carry samples around the show floor, then continue as a recognizable retail bag afterwards. The bag had to photograph for social, carry the brand's eco positioning, and run at a unit cost that worked as a giveaway.
Format chosen
White kraft shopping bag, 320×120×400mm, 120 gsm, flexo 2-color print (brand mark + tagline), twisted paper handle, reinforced base card, FSC-certified board with chain-of-custody documentation. 50-unit MOQ for the trade show set.
Result
The trade show bag was visible across the show floor and continued as a recognizable retail bag in the brand's home city after the event. The brand locked in the same bag format for future trade shows and seasonal retail drops, amortizing one dieline and one set of tooling across multiple uses.

Shopping = versatile middle. Kraft = eco & food. Luxury = boutique premium.

Shopping bags cover the broad middle of the bag family — white kraft, brown kraft, coated art paper, with twisted paper, die-cut, or rope handles. Kraft bags are uncoated, eco-positioned, and food-safe. Luxury bags are coated, laminated, edge-painted, and finished with ribbon or rigid leather-look handles. Choose shopping for versatile retail and event use; kraft for sustainability and food; luxury for boutique keepsake.

Twisted paper, flat tape, die-cut, or rope.

Twisted paper handles are the standard — comfortable, strong, and made from the same paper as the bag. Flat tape handles are a cost-down alternative for lighter bags. Die-cut handles are cut into the bag body with no hardware, ideal for trade shows and minimal designs. Rope handles (cotton or jute) suit boutique apparel and hampers.

Printed sample 5–7 days, production 10–15 days.

After design sign-off, a printed sample is produced in 5–7 business days. Production runs 10–15 business days after sample approval, depending on quantity, printing method, and handle type. Total door-to-door: 3–5 weeks for most orders. Rush production is available — we can compress to 8 business days for digital runs.

Yes — with a reinforced base card and heavier paper.

For apparel, hampers, and retail, we upgrade to 120–190 gsm paper and add a fitted 350–600 gsm reinforced base card that distributes weight and prevents the bag from bowing. Twisted paper handles are rated for 5–8kg; rope handles for 8–10kg. Send us your product weight and we will engineer the bag.

Yes — single-material paper bags are recyclable.

Uncoated kraft shopping bags with paper handles and water-based inks are recyclable in standard paper streams. Coated art paper bags with lamination are recyclable in many streams but check with your local recycler. For brands making an on-pack sustainability claim, request FSC-certified kraft and we will include chain-of-custody documentation.

Yes — printed inside is a standard option.

Interior printing on shopping bags is a standard option. Brands use the inside for a branded pattern, a color cue, or a surprise message visible when the bag is opened. Interior printing adds one pass and is quoted separately. Most common on white kraft and coated art paper for brighter print reproduction.

Match the bag to your product — small for boutique, large for apparel, XL for hampers.

Small (220×100×280mm) suits boutique, jewelry, and cosmetics. Medium (320×120×400mm) suits apparel and retail. Large (450×150×480mm) suits hampers and trade show swag. XL (500×180×520mm) suits oversized retail and corporate gifting. Custom sizes are available — send us your product dimensions and we will engineer the bag.
