Overview
What it is, and when to use it.
Custom kraft paper bags are the sustainable workhorse of modern retail. Each bag is built from unbleached brown or bleached white kraft paper — 80–150 gsm, FSC-certified, and printed with water-based inks — with twisted paper handles, flat tape handles, or die-cut handles cut into the body. The kraft format is the eco-positioned default across coffee shops, bakeries, grocery, zero-waste retail, apparel boutiques, and gifting — any context where the bag is part of a sustainability claim or carries the "natural" aesthetic. What makes a kraft bag different from a luxury paper bag or a retail paper bag is the material and the positioning. Kraft bags are uncoated, unbleached, and visibly natural — the brown fiber shows through the print. That signals eco, organic, craft, or small-batch. Luxury bags, by contrast, use coated art paper with lamination, edge painting, and ribbon handles — they signal premium and boutique. Retail bags are the high-volume, in-store workhorse. Kraft bags are the sustainable, food-safe, lower-cost option that pairs with water-based inks and FSC chain-of-custody documentation. We manufacture custom kraft paper bags in low MOQ runs starting at 50 units per SKU, with printed samples in 5–7 business days and production in 10–15 days. Every project runs on a dedicated production line in our FSC-certified facility in Foshan, China. Common applications include coffee shops and bakeries, grocery and zero-waste retail, apparel boutiques, gifting, farmers' markets, takeaway food, and eco-positioned DTC brands — any context where the bag signals sustainability, food-safety, or craft.

Buyer's decision framework
When to choose custom kraft paper bags — and when not to.
Kraft bags are the right call when sustainability, food-safety, or a natural aesthetic is the priority. They are the wrong call when the bag needs to signal premium boutique luxury, carry very heavy loads, or live on a retail shelf with glossy print. Walk through these four questions before you commit.
- 1
Is sustainability or food-safety a core brand claim?
If your brand leads with eco, organic, craft, or food-safe positioning, kraft is the strongest on-pack claim you can make. Uncoated kraft with water-based inks is recyclable, commercially compostable, and FDA-compliant for food contact. If your brand leads with luxury or boutique premium, a coated art-paper bag with lamination and edge painting is the right signal.
- 2
What is your target unit cost?
Kraft bags are the lowest-cost bag format — dropping further at 5,000+ units with flexo printing. Luxury paper bags run a premium on top with lamination, foil, and ribbon handles. If the bag is a commodity container for groceries or takeaway, kraft is the right economics. If the bag is a keepsake, kraft will feel cheap.
- 3
What will the bag carry — and how heavy?
Kraft bags with twisted paper handles and a reinforced base card are rated for 5–8kg — fine for grocery, hampers, and most retail. For heavier items (bottles, multiple tins), upgrade to 150 gsm kraft and a 600 gsm base card. For loads over 8kg, a luxury paper bag with rigid board reinforcement or a retail SOS sack is a better engineering choice.
- 4
Does the bag need to photograph for social or gifting?
Kraft bags photograph well for eco, craft, and food contexts — the natural fiber and visible texture signal authenticity. For gifting and boutique contexts where the bag is part of a luxury moment, a coated art-paper bag with foil, edge painting, and ribbon handles delivers the premium feel that kraft cannot.

Board & paper options
- ●Brown kraft (80–150 gsm)The eco-positioned default. Unbleached natural brown fiber, FSC-certified. Heavier grades (120–150 gsm) suit grocery and hampers; lighter grades (80–100 gsm) suit coffee and bakery.
- ●White kraft (90–150 gsm)Bleached white kraft for brighter CMYK print while keeping the kraft structure and FSC chain-of-custody. Pairs with water-based inks for a clean, eco-positioned look.
- ●Recycled kraft blends100% post-consumer recycled kraft for brands with a circular-economy positioning. Slightly lower tear strength than virgin kraft; pairs with reinforced base cards for heavier items.
- ●FSC-certified kraftRequired if your brand makes a sustainability claim on-pack or in marketing. We hold FSC license A000511 and supply chain-of-custody documentation.
- ●Grease-resistant kraft (PE-free)A PLA or PE-free grease-resistant lining for direct food contact — bakery, takeaway, oily snacks. Food-safe without compromising recyclability.
- ●Reinforced base card (350–600 gsm)A fitted base card that distributes weight and prevents the bag from bowing. Standard for grocery and hampers; upgraded to 600 gsm for heavier items like bottles.
Printing & finishes
How it gets dressed
Printing
- Flexo (1–3 colors)Recommended for 1,000+ unit runs with simple line art, logos, or single-color floods. Lowest per-unit cost at volume; water-based inks are eco-friendly and food-safe.
- Offset CMYKRecommended for 500+ units and full-color photographic artwork on white kraft. Sharper than flexo, better for brand-critical prints.
- Digital printRecommended for 50–500 unit runs and market tests. No plate setup, fast turnaround, ideal for validating a bag design before committing to volume.
- Hot stamp foilRecommended for premium eco brands that want gold, silver, or rose-gold foil accents on a kraft body. Adds a one-pass setup cost per foil color.
- Pantone spot colorsRecommended for brand-critical color matches on white kraft. Essential when CMYK cannot reproduce a corporate color.
- Printed inside (optional)Recommended for branded inside-the-bag unboxing. The interior print carries a brand pattern, message, or color cue visible when the bag is opened.
Finishes
- Twisted paper handle (standard)
- Flat tape handle
- Die-cut handle (no hardware)
- Ribbon handle (satin or grosgrain)
- Reinforced base card (350–600 gsm)
- Hot stamp foil (gold, silver, rose gold)
- Gusseted side panels
- Custom hang tag & gift card

Ordering & pricing
MOQ, lead time, and what drives the unit cost.
Every bag is custom — there is no flat price list. Here is what you need to plan around, and what we will confirm in your tailored quote within 24 hours.
MOQ & sampling
Our standard MOQ for custom kraft paper bags is 50 units per SKU — low enough to test a design, a seasonal collection, or a wholesale client without committing to volume. At 50 units we use digital printing, which avoids plate costs. From 1,000 units, flexo printing becomes more economical per unit. From 5,000 units, dedicated tooling brings the unit cost down further. Sample fees are credited against your first production order.
Lead time
Sampling: printed sample in 5–7 business days. Production: 10–15 business days after sample approval, depending on quantity, printing method, and handle type. Shipping: 10–25 days DDP to 50+ countries, depending on destination and whether air or sea freight is chosen. Total door-to-door timeline: 3–5 weeks for most orders. Rush production is available — we can compress to 8 business days for digital runs.
How to read pricing
Final pricing is confirmed in your tailored quote within 24 hours. We do not publish a flat price list because every kraft bag is custom — but we will always show the unit cost at 50, 100, 500, 1,000, and 5,000 units so you can see the volume curve before committing.
What affects the unit cost
Seven factors that move the quote.
Order quantity
Unit cost drops sharply from 50 to 5,000 units as setup, plates, and handle tooling amortize. Beyond 5,000, savings continue but flatten.
Kraft grade & weight
Standard 100 gsm brown kraft is the baseline. Heavier 120–150 gsm for grocery and hampers adds 15–30% to material cost. White kraft is comparable to brown. Recycled-content kraft is slightly costlier.
Bag size
Larger bags use more kraft and lower the number of units per press sheet. A 400×180×480mm hamper bag costs roughly 3× a 180×80×250mm coffee bag.
Printing method
Digital is economical at 50–500 units. Flexo is cheapest from 1,000 units for 1–3 color line art. Offset CMYK is cheapest from 1,000 units for full-color on white kraft. Foil adds a setup cost per color.
Handles
Twisted paper handles are the standard. Flat tape handles are cheaper. Die-cut handles add tooling. Ribbon handles (satin or grosgrain) add per-unit hardware cost.
Reinforcements
Reinforced base cards (350–600 gsm) and gusseted side panels add per-unit cost but are required for heavier loads. Folded top edges add a clean finish for boutique kraft bags.
Food-safe linings
PLA or PE-free grease-resistant linings for direct food contact add per-unit cost but maintain recyclability. Required for bakery, takeaway, and oily snacks.

Real project
How a coffee roastery rolled out branded kraft bags across retail and wholesale.

- Client
- Specialty coffee roastery (US, retail & wholesale)
- Challenge
- A specialty coffee roastery was supplying cafes and retail customers in plain stock kraft bags with a sticker label — brand presence was weak, and wholesale clients asked for a more professional bag that still carried the roastery's eco positioning.
- Format chosen
- Brown kraft bag, 250×110×320mm, 120 gsm, flexo 2-color print (brand mark + roast date field), twisted paper handle, reinforced base card, FSC-certified board with chain-of-custody documentation. 50-unit MOQ per roast profile.
- Result
- The roastery rolled out the branded kraft bag across three wholesale cafe clients and their own retail counter, replacing sticker-label stock bags. The FSC chain-of-custody documentation supported their eco claim on-pack, and the flexo 2-color print kept the unit cost sustainable at wholesale pricing.

Yes — with food-grade water-based inks.
All kraft bags can be printed with FDA-compliant water-based inks for direct food contact, suitable for bakeries, coffee shops, and takeaway. For greasy or oily food, we add a PLA or PE-free grease-resistant lining that maintains recyclability. Natural kraft with water-based inks is the food-safe default.
Twisted paper, flat tape, die-cut, or ribbon.
Twisted paper handles are the standard — comfortable, strong, and made from the same kraft as the bag. Flat tape handles are a cost-down alternative for lighter bags. Die-cut handles are cut into the bag body with no hardware, ideal for minimal eco positioning. Ribbon handles (satin or grosgrain) suit gifting and boutique kraft bags.
Printed sample 5–7 days, production 10–15 days.
After design sign-off, a printed sample is produced in 5–7 business days. Production runs 10–15 business days after sample approval, depending on quantity, printing method, and handle type. Total door-to-door: 3–5 weeks for most orders. Rush production is available — we can compress to 8 business days for digital runs.
Yes — single-material kraft is recyclable and commercially compostable.
Uncoated kraft bags with water-based inks and paper handles are recyclable in standard paper streams and commercially compostable. Avoid lamination, foil, or plastic-coated liners if compostability is a goal — they break the composting chain. For brands making an on-pack sustainability claim, request FSC-certified kraft and we will include chain-of-custody documentation.
Yes — with a reinforced base card and heavier kraft.
For grocery, bottles, and hampers, we upgrade to 120–150 gsm kraft and add a fitted 350–600 gsm reinforced base card that distributes weight and prevents the bag from bowing. Twisted paper handles are rated for 5–8kg; die-cut handles suit lighter loads (under 2kg). Send us your product weight and we will engineer the bag.
Yes — printed inside is a standard option.
Interior printing on kraft bags is a standard option. Brands use the inside for a branded pattern, a color cue, or a surprise message visible when the bag is opened. Interior printing adds one pass and is quoted separately. Most common on white kraft for brighter print reproduction.
Kraft = eco & food. Luxury = boutique & premium. Retail = high-volume in-store.
Kraft bags are the eco-positioned, food-safe, lower-cost option — uncoated, natural, FSC-certified. Luxury paper bags use coated art paper with lamination, edge painting, and ribbon handles — they signal premium boutique. Retail paper bags are the high-volume, in-store workhorse, typically flexo-printed kraft or white paper. Choose kraft for sustainability and food; luxury for boutique premium; retail for high-volume in-store.
