High-volume, in-store retail paper bags built for the till — flat-handle, twisted-handle, and SOS (self-opening sack) formats at scale, FSC-certified and printed with water-based inks.

Quick answer

Custom retail paper bags are the high-volume, in-store workhorse of the bag family — engineered to carry groceries, apparel, gifts, and impulse buys from the till. Built from brown kraft, white kraft, or recycled blends (70–150 gsm), printed flexo (1–4 colors) or offset CMYK at high volume, with flat-handle, twisted-handle, or SOS (self-opening sack) formats. They are used by grocery chains, supermarket private-label, convenience retail, apparel chains, bookstores, and gift shops where the bag is a commodity container at high volume and the unit cost is the priority. MOQ starts at 50 units for tests; economic production from 1,000 units. Lead time is 10–15 business days after sample approval. Sample fees are credited against your first production order. DDP shipping to 50+ countries.

Overview

What it is, and when to use it.

Custom retail paper bags are the high-volume, in-store workhorse of the bag family — engineered to carry groceries, apparel, gifts, and impulse buys from the till to the car or the walk home. Each bag is built from brown kraft, white kraft, or recycled blends — 70–110 gsm for SOS sacks, 100–150 gsm for flat-handle and twisted-handle bags — printed flexo (1–4 colors) or offset CMYK at high volume. The standard formats are flat-handle bags (grocery, supermarket), twisted-handle bags (apparel chains, bookstores, gift shops), and SOS (self-opening sack) formats for high-speed grocery filling. What makes a retail bag different from a kraft bag or a shopping bag is the volume and the channel. Kraft bags are eco-positioned and food-safe at lower volumes. Shopping bags are the versatile middle of the bag family. Retail bags are the high-volume, in-store, lowest-unit-cost format — engineered for tens of thousands of units per store per year, with flexo printing, water-based inks, and FSC chain-of-custody documentation. That makes retail bags the right format for grocery chains, supermarket private-label, convenience retail, apparel chains, bookstores, and gift shops — any context where the bag is a commodity container at high volume and the unit cost is the priority. We manufacture custom retail paper bags in low MOQ runs starting at 50 units per SKU for testing, with economic production from 1,000 units and dedicated high-volume lines from 10,000 units. Printed samples in 5–7 business days and production in 10–15 days. Every project runs on a dedicated production line in our FSC-certified facility in Foshan, China. Common applications include grocery and supermarket, convenience retail, apparel chains, bookstores and gift shops, bakery and takeaway, pharmacy, and hardware store — any context where the bag is handed at the till at high volume.

Buyer's decision framework

When to choose custom retail paper bags — and when not to.

Retail bags are the right call when the bag is handed at the till at high volume and the unit cost is the priority. They are the wrong call when the bag is a boutique keepsake, a low-volume eco statement, or a versatile carrier across events. Walk through these four questions before you commit.

  1. 1

Is the bag handed at the till at high volume — or low volume?

If the bag is handed at the till across many stores at high volume (grocery, supermarket, convenience, apparel chain), a retail bag is the format engineered for that channel: flexo-printed, FSC-certified, lowest per-unit cost. If the bag is a low-volume eco statement, a kraft bag at 50–500 units is the right positioning.

  2. 2

What is your target unit cost?

Retail bags are the lowest-cost format in the bag family at volume with flexo printing — comparable to kraft at lower volumes. Shopping bags sit above retail; luxury bags run a premium on top. If the bag is a commodity container at high volume, retail is the right economics. If the bag is a keepsake, retail is over-commodified.

  3. 3

What format does the till need — flat-handle, twisted-handle, or SOS?

Flat tape handles are the grocery and supermarket standard — economical and strong. Twisted paper handles are the apparel, bookstore, and gift-shop standard — more comfortable and premium-looking. SOS (self-opening sack) formats auto-erect at the till for high-speed grocery filling. Choose the format based on the till speed and the retail context.

  4. 4

Does the bag need to carry an FSC or sustainability claim?

Retail bags are the strongest format for an on-pack sustainability claim at volume — FSC-certified kraft with water-based inks and chain-of-custody documentation, printed at flexo scale, gives the lowest per-bag cost for a verified sustainability claim. For lower-volume eco statements, a kraft bag is comparable. For luxury positioning with a sustainability claim, request FSC-certified art paper.

Materials

Board & paper options

  • Brown kraft (70–110 gsm)The high-volume retail default — unbleached natural kraft, FSC-certified, with water-based inks. Lighter grades (70–90 gsm) suit SOS grocery sacks; heavier grades (100–110 gsm) suit flat-handle and twisted-handle bags.
  • White kraft (90–120 gsm)Bleached white kraft for brighter flexo and offset print. Used by apparel chains, bookstores, and gift shops that want a cleaner branded look while keeping the kraft structure.
  • Recycled kraft blends100% post-consumer recycled kraft for grocery and supermarket private-label bags with a circular-economy positioning. Slightly lower tear strength than virgin kraft; pairs with reinforced base cards.
  • FSC-certified kraftRequired if your retail brand makes a sustainability claim on-pack or in marketing. We hold FSC license A000511 and supply chain-of-custody documentation.
  • Grease-resistant kraft (PE-free)A PLA or PE-free grease-resistant lining for direct food contact — bakery, takeaway, deli, and liquor store. Food-safe without compromising recyclability.
  • Reinforced base card (350–600 gsm)A fitted base card that distributes weight and prevents the bag from bowing. Standard for grocery and liquor; upgraded to 600 gsm for bottles and heavier items.

Printing & finishes

How it gets dressed

Printing

  • Flexo (1–4 colors)Recommended for 1,000+ unit runs with simple line art, logos, or single-color floods. The high-volume retail standard — lowest per-unit cost at volume; water-based inks are eco-friendly and food-safe.
  • Offset CMYKRecommended for 1,000+ units with full-color photographic artwork on white kraft. Sharper than flexo, used by apparel chains and bookstores for brand-critical prints.
  • Digital printRecommended for 50–500 unit runs and market tests. No plate setup, fast turnaround, ideal for validating a retail bag design before committing to volume.
  • Pantone spot colorsRecommended for brand-critical color matches on white kraft. Essential when CMYK cannot reproduce a corporate color or for Pantone-locked retail brands.
  • Printed inside (optional)Recommended for branded inside-the-bag presentation at the till. The interior print carries a brand pattern or color cue visible when the bag is opened.
  • Hot stamp foilRecommended for premium retail chains that want foil accents on a kraft body. Adds a one-pass setup cost per foil color.

Finishes

  • Flat tape handle (grocery standard)
  • Twisted paper handle (apparel standard)
  • Die-cut handle (no hardware)
  • SOS (self-opening sack) for high-speed filling
  • Reinforced base card (350–600 gsm)
  • Hot stamp foil (gold, silver, rose gold)
  • Gusseted side panels
  • Custom hang tag & gift card

Ordering & pricing

MOQ, lead time, and what drives the unit cost.

Every bag is custom — there is no flat price list. Here is what you need to plan around, and what we will confirm in your tailored quote within 24 hours.

MOQ & sampling

Our standard MOQ for custom retail paper bags is 50 units per SKU — enough to test a design or a pilot store. For economic production at the till, 1,000 units is the practical floor where flexo becomes cheaper per unit than digital. For SOS-style grocery sacks, the minimum is 5,000 units. Dedicated high-volume lines run from 10,000 units upward. Sample fees are credited against your first production order.

Lead time

Sampling: printed sample in 5–7 business days. Production: 10–15 business days after sample approval, depending on quantity, printing method, and handle type. High-volume flexo runs (10,000+ units) sit at the longer end of the range. Shipping: 10–25 days DDP to 50+ countries, depending on destination and whether air or sea freight is chosen. Total door-to-door timeline: 3–5 weeks for most orders. Rush production is available for digital and small flexo runs.

How to read pricing

Final pricing is confirmed in your tailored quote within 24 hours. We do not publish a flat price list because every retail bag is custom — but we will always show the unit cost at 50, 100, 500, 1,000, and 10,000 units so you can see the volume curve before committing.

What affects the unit cost

Seven factors that move the quote.

  • Order quantity

Unit cost drops sharply from 50 to 10,000 units as setup, plates, and handle tooling amortize. Beyond 10,000, savings continue but flatten. High-volume flexo is the cheapest per-bag production method.

  • Kraft grade & weight

Standard 90 gsm brown kraft is the baseline. Heavier 110–150 gsm for flat-handle and twisted-handle bags adds 15–30%. White kraft is comparable to brown. Recycled-content kraft is slightly costlier.

  • Bag size

Larger bags use more kraft and lower the number of units per press sheet. A 450×200×520mm supermarket SOS bag costs roughly 3× a 200×100×280mm small pharmacy bag.

  • Printing method

Digital is economical at 50–500 units. Flexo is cheapest from 1,000 units for 1–4 color line art. Offset CMYK is cheapest from 1,000 units for full-color on white kraft. Foil adds a setup cost per color.

  • Handles

Flat tape handles are the cheapest — standard for grocery and SOS. Twisted paper handles add 15–25% per bag. Die-cut handles add tooling. SOS formats have no separate handle — the bag is a sack.

  • Reinforcements

Reinforced base cards (350–600 gsm) and gusseted side panels add per-unit cost but are required for heavier loads. Folded top edges add a clean finish for twisted-handle retail bags.

  • Food-safe linings

PLA or PE-free grease-resistant linings for direct food contact add per-unit cost but maintain recyclability. Required for bakery, takeaway, deli, and liquor store.

Real project

How a regional grocery chain standardized on a branded SOS retail bag.

Custom Retail Paper Bags real project example
Client
Regional grocery chain (US, multi-store private-label bag)
Challenge
A regional grocery chain was using unbranded stock SOS bags at the till and wanted a private-label bag that carried the chain's logo, sustainability claim, and a thank-you message — without increasing the per-bag cost materially versus the stock bag. Volume was high and the unit cost was the priority.
Format chosen
Brown kraft SOS bag, 360×200×460mm, 90 gsm, flexo 2-color print (chain logo + "Thank you" + FSC on-pack claim), flat tape handle, reinforced base card, FSC-certified board with chain-of-custody documentation. Production tier: 10,000+ units per store per order.
Result
The chain rolled out the private-label SOS bag across all stores, replacing the stock unbranded bag. The flexo 2-color print kept the per-bag cost within budget, and the FSC on-pack claim supported the chain's sustainability marketing. The same dieline now serves grocery, bakery, and pharmacy in-store bagging across the chain.

50 units for tests; 1,000+ units for economic production.

Our standard MOQ for custom retail paper bags is 50 units per SKU — enough to test a design or a pilot store. For economic production at the till, 1,000 units is the practical floor (flexo becomes cheaper per unit). For SOS-style grocery sacks, the minimum is 5,000 units. Dedicated high-volume lines run from 10,000 units upward.

Flat = grocery. Twisted = apparel. SOS = high-speed grocery filling.

Flat tape handles are the grocery and supermarket standard — economical, strong, and rated for 5–8kg. Twisted paper handles are the apparel, bookstore, and gift-shop standard — more comfortable to carry and premium-looking. SOS (self-opening sack) formats are flat-bottomed sacks that auto-erect at the till for high-speed grocery filling — used by supermarkets and convenience retail.

Yes — with food-grade water-based inks.

All retail bags can be printed with FDA-compliant water-based inks for direct food contact, suitable for bakeries, coffee shops, grocery, deli, and liquor store. For greasy or oily food, we add a PLA or PE-free grease-resistant lining that maintains recyclability. Natural kraft with water-based inks is the food-safe default.

Printed sample 5–7 days, production 10–15 days.

After design sign-off, a printed sample is produced in 5–7 business days. Production runs 10–15 business days after sample approval, depending on quantity and printing method. High-volume flexo runs (10,000+ units) sit at the longer end. Total door-to-door: 3–5 weeks for most orders. Rush production is available for digital and small flexo runs.

Yes — single-material kraft is recyclable and commercially compostable.

Uncoated kraft retail bags with water-based inks and paper handles are recyclable in standard paper streams and commercially compostable. Avoid lamination, foil, or plastic-coated liners if compostability is a goal. For brands making an on-pack sustainability claim, request FSC-certified kraft and we will include chain-of-custody documentation.

Yes — with a reinforced base card and heavier kraft.

For grocery, bottles, and hampers, we upgrade to 110–150 gsm kraft and add a fitted 350–600 gsm reinforced base card that distributes weight and prevents the bag from bowing. Flat tape handles are rated for 5–8kg; twisted paper handles for 5–8kg; SOS sacks for 8–12kg. Send us your product weight and we will engineer the bag.

Yes — printed inside is a standard option.

Interior printing on retail bags is a standard option. Brands use the inside for a branded pattern, a color cue, or a surprise message visible when the bag is opened. Interior printing adds one pass and is quoted separately. Most common on white kraft for brighter print reproduction.

Retail = high-volume in-store. Kraft = eco & food. Shopping = versatile middle. Luxury = boutique premium.

Retail bags are the high-volume, in-store, lowest-unit-cost format — economical at volume with flexo printing. Kraft bags are eco-positioned at lower volumes. Shopping bags cover the versatile middle. Luxury bags are boutique premium at the highest unit cost. Choose retail for high-volume in-store; kraft for sustainability and food at lower volumes; shopping for versatile retail and events; luxury for boutique keepsake.
