Quick Buyer Answer

A custom display box is a POP (point of purchase) counter, shelf, or floor display built from corrugated board. Unlike a shipping carton that protects a product in transit, or a folding carton that holds one product on the shelf, a display box is the display itself — a printed corrugated structure that sits at the retail shelf and holds multiple units of a product while acting as an on-brand billboard. Display boxes are built from B-flute, E-flute, or BC-flute corrugated with a litho-lam wrap for full-color CMYK or Pantone print, and they are the format for product launches, seasonal promotions, and trade-show retail. At Custom Display Boxes we manufacture counter, shelf, and floor displays from a 100-unit MOQ, with white samples in 5–7 business days and printed samples in 7–10 days. The price of a display box depends on its size, the flute grade, the print method, and the quantity — larger floor displays cost the most per unit, and per-unit cost drops sharply as volume rises from 100 to 1,000 units.

Display Types: Counter, Shelf & Floor

The right display format starts with the retail channel and the number of units you want in front of the shopper. Three formats cover the vast majority of retail display needs.
  • Counter displays sit on a checkout counter and hold 10–30 units. They suit impulse-buy categories — snacks, lip balm, gum — and work from B-flute (holding up to about 5 kg) or E-flute for a lighter, premium counter unit. A crash-lock or tuck-tab bottom erects in about 30 seconds.
  • Shelf displays sit on a standard retail shelf and hold 6–24 units. They are the format for grocery and drug channels, built on B-flute for crush resistance with litho-lam print across the front face — the part the shopper sees.
  • Floor displays stand on the floor and hold 50–200 units. Built on BC-flute double-wall corrugated for a free-standing heavy load, they are the club-store or big-box format. Flexo-printed floor displays start from a 500-unit MOQ, while litho-lam floor displays run from 100 units.
Display boxes ship flat to save freight volume and erect at the store — a counter display in about 30 seconds, a floor display in up to 5 minutes. For a detailed comparison of the corrugated material behind all three, see the Corrugated Packaging guide.

Display vs Folding Carton

The two formats serve different jobs at retail. A folding carton holds a single product on the shelf; a display box holds multiple units and acts as the shelf display itself.

Choose a folding carton when each unit needs to carry its own barcode, regulatory text, and protection; choose a display box when the goal is sell-through from a high-traffic shelf position. See Custom Folding Cartons for the single-unit format.

Display vs Shipping Box

Retail display packaging is not transport packaging. A display box is not a shipping box, and treating it as one will overprice your freight and under-serve the product. A shipping box (an RSC regular slotted carton) is a sealed corrugated carton that protects products in transit and is discarded at the fulfillment center. A display box is an open POP structure that sits on a counter, shelf, or floor, holds multiple units for the shopper to pick up, and is erected at the retail store — not sealed and shipped with product inside. Display boxes ship flat because the freight advantage is significant (a flat-packed display takes roughly 5–10× less freight volume than a pre-assembled structure), then the store associate erects them at the shelf. If you need both — a printed retail-facing format that also protects in transit — that is the Corrugated Boxes litho-lam shipper or a Mailer Box, not a display box.

Materials

Custom display boxes are built from corrugated board, chosen by flute grade and print surface.
  • B-flute (2.5–3.0 mm) — the standard display flute. Good crush resistance for counter and shelf displays holding 10–30 units. Takes a litho-lam wrap for full-color print.
  • E-flute (1.0–1.5 mm) — the thin flute for premium counter displays. Smooth print surface, ideal for litho-lam, but not for loads above about 5 kg.
  • BC-flute (5.0–6.0 mm, double-wall) — two fluted layers plus three liners, for free-standing floor displays holding 50+ units.
  • Litho-lam wrap (157 gsm art paper) — a printed art paper sheet laminated to the corrugated board; the standard display print surface for CMYK or Pantone.
  • Coated SBS paperboard — used for the interior tray or product dividers, giving a clean white print surface for product-facing graphics.
  • FSC-certified corrugated — required for on-pack sustainability claims; we hold FSC license A000511 and supply chain-of-custody documentation.

Printing & Brand Visibility

Because a display box is a billboard, print quality is the reason the format exists. Print choice follows quantity.
  • Litho-lamination (offset CMYK) — recommended for 1,000+ units and full-color photographic artwork; the lowest per-unit cost at volume for premium printed displays.
  • Litho-lamination (digital) — recommended for 100–1,000 unit runs; no plate setup, fast turnaround, ideal for market tests and seasonal launches.
  • Pantone spot colors — for brand-critical matches (logo reds, brand blues) that CMYK cannot reproduce.
  • Flexo print (direct) — for high-volume floor displays (5,000+ units) where print quality is secondary, at a lower cost than litho-lam.
  • Metallic inks — shimmer on the display exterior without the cost of foil.
  • White ink on dark litho-lam — for matte black, navy, or deep displays where CMYK alone cannot print light text.
Retail visibility and brand consistency come from matching the display to your existing artwork and brand colors — send your brand Pantone references and the litho-lam print will carry them, or layer foil stamping and spot UV onto the litho-lam for a premium counter display.

Cost

A display box is custom, so there is no flat price list — the quote is built from the brief. The main cost drivers, in order of influence, are:
  • Size — larger floor displays use more board than counter displays.
  • Structure — BC-flute double-wall costs more than E-flute; floor displays are the most expensive format.
  • Material — flute grade and the litho-lam wrap grade.
  • Quantity — per-unit cost drops sharply from 100 → 500 → 1,000 units, then gradually to 10,000.
  • Printing — litho-lam offset vs digital vs flexo; the more units, the lower the per-unit print cost.
  • Finishes — matte/gloss lamination, foil, and spot UV each add a small per-unit cost; aqueous coating is included.
  • Insert / divider — coated SBS tray inserts add a modest per-unit cost.
  • Shipping — displays ship flat, which keeps freight low; DDP delivery is available to 50+ countries with no surprise duties.
We do not publish a flat price list because every display is custom, but a tailored quote is confirmed within 24 hours and shows the unit cost at 100, 500, 1,000, and 5,000 units so you can see the volume curve before committing.

FAQ

Common questions buyers ask before quoting a custom display box are answered in the frequently-asked section below.

Frequently asked

A POP (point of purchase) counter, shelf, or floor display built from corrugated board that holds multiple units and acts as an on-brand billboard at the retail shelf.

A display box is the display itself rather than product packaging. It sits on a counter, shelf, or floor, holds multiple units of a product, and is printed to act as a brand billboard. It is built from corrugated board with a litho-lam wrap and ships flat to be erected at the retail store.

A small POP display that sits on a checkout counter and holds 10–30 units for impulse-buy categories.

A countertop (counter) display sits on a checkout counter and holds 10–30 units. It suits impulse-buy categories such as snacks, lip balm, and gum, and uses B-flute (for loads up to about 5 kg) or E-flute for a lighter, premium unit. A crash-lock or tuck-tab bottom erects it in about 30 seconds.

B-flute, E-flute, and BC-flute corrugated board with a 157 gsm litho-lam art paper wrap, plus coated SBS tray inserts.

B-flute (2.5–3.0 mm) is the standard display flute; E-flute (1.0–1.5 mm) is the thin premium flute; BC-flute (5.0–6.0 mm double-wall) is for floor displays. The standard print surface is a 157 gsm art paper litho-lam wrap, with coated SBS paperboard used for interior trays and dividers. FSC-certified corrugated is available.

100 units per SKU (flexo-printed floor displays from 500 units).

The standard MOQ for custom counter, shelf, and floor displays is 100 units per SKU. At 100 units, digital litho-lam print is used; from 1,000 units offset litho-lam becomes more economical. Flexo-printed floor displays run from a 500-unit MOQ.

Varies by size, structure, material, printing, and quantity — confirmed in a tailored quote within 24 hours.

There is no flat price list because every display is custom. Cost is driven by size, flute structure (floor displays cost most), material, printing method, finishes, inserts, and quantity. Per-unit cost drops sharply from 100 to 500 to 1,000 units and more gradually to 10,000. A tailored quote shows the unit cost at 100, 500, 1,000, and 5,000 units.

Yes — litho-lam offset CMYK, digital, Pantone spot colors, and flexo.

Display boxes use a litho-lam printed art paper wrap. Offset CMYK is recommended from 1,000 units, digital from 100–1,000, Pantone spot colors for brand-critical matches, and flexo for high-volume floor displays above 5,000 units. Metallic inks, white ink on dark grounds, and finishes like foil and spot UV are available.

Yes — they are a POP retail display format that ships flat and erects at the store.

Display boxes are purpose-built for retail. They ship flat to save freight volume and erect at the store in 30 seconds (counter) to 5 minutes (floor). They are used for product launches, seasonal promotions, and trade-show retail across grocery, drug, club, and big-box channels.

Yes — white samples in 5–7 business days, printed samples in 7–10 days, credited to your order.

White samples (unprinted, exact construction) ship in 5–7 business days and printed samples (your artwork, finish, and color) in 7–10 business days. Sample fees are credited against your production order. The white sample is critical for display boxes because it confirms the structural dieline and erect action.
