Overview

What it is, and when to use it.

Custom setup boxes are pre-assembled rigid boxes that arrive at your packing station ready to fill — no folding, no erecting, no assembly required. They are built from 1.5–2.5mm greyboard wrapped in art or specialty paper, with two lid options: a separate lift-off lid (two-piece setup) or an attached hinged lid (book-style setup). Unlike collapsible rigid boxes (magnetic), setup boxes do not fold flat — they ship in their assembled form, which means higher freight volume but a stronger premium signal and zero risk of assembly error at the packing station. Setup boxes are the traditional format for luxury counter goods, confectionery, stationery, and corporate gifting where the box arrives at the retail counter or gift recipient in perfect, factory-tuned condition. The construction is bulletproof: no hinge to fail, no magnet to weaken, no fold to crack. This makes setup boxes ideal for boxes that are opened once and kept — think luxury gift sets, limited editions, and collector items. The format is older than the modern magnetic box and remains the benchmark for premium counter packaging because of its permanent, non-collapsible construction. What distinguishes setup boxes from rigid boxes? They are the same construction — "setup box" is the traditional term used in North America and the confectionery/stationery trades for a pre-assembled rigid box. Both describe the same format. We manufacture setup boxes from 50 units, with white samples in 5–7 business days and printed samples in 7–10 days. Every project runs on a dedicated line in our 18,000 m² FSC-certified facility in Foshan, China, with hand QC at the wrap and assembly station.

Buyer's decision framework

When to choose setup boxes

Setup construction is the right answer when the box must arrive at the retail counter or gift recipient in perfect, factory-tuned condition — no fold lines, no assembly, no risk of error. The format trades higher freight volume for a stronger premium signal and bulletproof construction.

  1. 1

Does the box go to a retail counter or direct to a gift recipient?

Yes — setup boxes are the format of choice when the box arrives in the recipient's hands in perfect condition. The pre-assembled construction means no fold lines, no assembly errors, and a stronger premium signal. If the box goes to an ecommerce warehouse for fulfillment, magnetic or mailer may fit better.

  2. 2

    Can freight absorb pre-assembled volume?

Yes — setup boxes do not ship flat. A pre-assembled setup box takes roughly 2.5× the freight volume of a flat-packed magnetic box of the same size. Plan sea freight volume accordingly, or choose magnetic if freight volume is the constraint.

  3. 3

    Lift-off lid or hinged lid?

Lift-off lid (the two-piece setup variant) for confectionery and gift sets — the lid comes fully off. Hinged lid (the book-style setup variant) for counter goods and heritage products — the lid stays attached at the spine. Both are quoted at the same cost unless the hinged lid requires spine scoring.

  4. 4

    Is the construction bulletproof requirement?

Yes — setup boxes have no hinge to fail, no magnet to weaken, no fold to crack. The format is the benchmark for premium counter packaging because the construction is permanent and non-collapsible. If the box will be opened and closed repeatedly, choose magnetic instead (setup boxes are typically opened once and kept).

Materials

Board & paper options

  • 1200–1800 gsm greyboardThe structural core for setup boxes. 1.5mm for lighter items (stationery, confectionery), 2mm standard, 2.5mm for weighty gift sets. Wrapped in art or specialty paper, arrives pre-assembled.
  • Art paper wrap (128–300 gsm)The baseline wrap for printed setup boxes. Takes CMYK, Pantone, foil, and lamination cleanly. 157 gsm is the sweet spot for most projects.
  • Specialty paper (Curious, Fedrigoni, Gmund)For brands where the paper itself is the statement — tactile, colored, or metallic stocks that need no printing. Popular for luxury counter and heritage gifting.
  • Textured stocks (linen, leather, kraft)Adds a tactile surface that photographs well. Leather-look for counter goods; linen for confectionery; kraft for eco-positioned food programs.
  • FSC-certified wrap papersRequired if your brand makes a sustainability claim on-pack. We hold FSC license A000511 and supply chain-of-custody documentation.
  • Velvet flocking & fabric inlayInterior lining that signals luxury the moment the box is opened. Used for confectionery, counter goods, and gift sets where the inside is photographed.

Printing & finishes

How it gets dressed

Printing

  • Offset CMYKRecommended for 500+ units and full-color photographic artwork. Lowest per-unit cost at volume.
  • Pantone spot colorsRecommended for brand-critical color matches (logo reds, brand blues) where CMYK cannot reproduce a corporate color.
  • Digital printRecommended for 50–500 unit runs. No plate setup, fast turnaround, ideal for market tests and seasonal launches.
  • Metallic inksRecommended for shimmer effects without foil-stamp cost. Subtler than foil, good for backgrounds and patterns.
  • Litho laminationRecommended for setup boxes — the printed sheet wraps the entire box exterior including edges. Standard for premium setup construction.
  • White ink on dark wrapsRecommended for matte black, navy, or deep-colored wraps where CMYK alone cannot print light text or logos.

Finishes

  • Soft-touch lamination (velvet feel)
  • Matte or gloss lamination
  • Foil stamping (gold, silver, rose gold, holographic)
  • Embossing & debossing
  • Spot UV on matte grounds
  • Ribbon-tie closure (satin, grosgrain, organza)
  • Velvet flocking & fabric inlay
  • Custom EVA foam inserts

Ordering & pricing

MOQ, lead time, and what drives the unit cost.

Every box is custom — there is no flat price list. Here is what you need to plan around, and what we will confirm in your tailored quote within 24 hours.

MOQ & sampling

MOQ is 50 units per SKU. We can run smaller quantities as a sample or pilot program — ask us.

Lead time

Standard lead time is 10–15 business days after sample approval. Air freight (5–7 days) and sea freight (28–35 days) are both available.

How to read pricing

Final pricing is confirmed in your tailored quote within 24 hours. We do not publish a flat price list because every setup box is custom — but we will always show the unit cost at 50, 100, 500, 1,000, and 5,000 units so you can see the volume curve before committing.

What affects the unit cost

Seven factors that move the quote.

  • Construction (rigid wrap + assembly)

Each box is wrapped by hand and assembled at the factory. At 1,000 units expect a premium per-unit cost depending on size and finish.

  • Board caliper

1.5mm for lighter items (stationery, confectionery); 2mm standard; 2.5mm for weighty gift sets. Higher caliper = stronger premium signal but higher cost.

  • Wrap material

Art paper is the baseline. Specialty paper (Curious, Fedrigoni, Gmund) adds 20–40%. Textured stocks (linen, leather) add 30–50%.

  • Print method

Digital for 50–500 units (no plate cost). Offset for 500+ units. Pantone adds plate cost. Litho lamination is standard for setup boxes.

  • Finishes

Soft-touch lamination, foil stamping, and embossing each add a modest per-unit cost. Spot UV adds a small per-unit cost. Specialty finishes compound — budget for the 2–3 that matter most.

  • Lid type

Lift-off lid no additional cost. Hinged lid (book-style variant) adds a modest per-unit cost for spine scoring. Ribbon-tie closure adds a modest per-unit cost.

  • Inserts

Die-cut cardboard adds a modest per-unit cost. EVA foam adds a meaningful per-unit cost. Velvet flocking is the most expensive insert option. Vacuum-formed tray adds a meaningful per-unit cost (food-safe, common for confectionery).

  • Freight volume (pre-assembled)

Setup boxes ship pre-assembled — freight volume is ~2.5× a flat-packed magnetic box of the same size. Plan sea freight cost per unit accordingly.

Real project

How a confectionery brand delivered factory-perfect boxes to 500 retail counters.

Custom Setup Boxes real project example
Client
Premium chocolate confectionery brand (US, 2,000-unit holiday program)
Challenge
A premium confectionery brand needed a counter-display box for a 2,000-unit holiday program that would arrive at 500 retail counters in perfect factory-tuned condition, hold 16 truffles in two layers, and signal luxury at a $48 retail price point. The brand could not risk assembly errors or damaged boxes at the retail counter.
Format chosen
Rigid setup box with lift-off lid, 250×180×70mm. 2mm greyboard wrapped in soft-touch deep brown art paper. Copper foil logo on the lid. Two-layer cardboard insert with 8 cavities per layer. Satin ribbon-tie closure in brand cream. Pre-assembled delivery with tissue pre-folded inside.
Result
The pre-assembled construction meant every box arrived at each retail counter in factory-tuned condition — no fold lines, no assembly errors, no damaged lids. The two-layer insert doubled the truffle count per box without increasing the footprint. The format earned its cost premium at the $48 retail price point, and the entire 2,000-unit program sold through within the holiday window, with the brand reordering for the following year.

50 units.

Our standard MOQ for fully custom setup boxes is 50 units per SKU. At 50 units we use digital printing, which avoids plate setup costs. From 500 units, offset printing becomes more economical per unit. Setup boxes are labor-intensive because each box is wrapped by hand and assembled at the factory.

They are the same construction — "setup box" is the traditional term for a pre-assembled rigid box.

A setup box is a pre-assembled rigid box — the two terms refer to the same construction. "Rigid box" is the modern term used across the packaging industry; "setup box" is the traditional term used in North America and in the confectionery and stationery trades. Both describe a box built from 1.5–2.5mm greyboard, wrapped in art or specialty paper, and shipped pre-assembled. If you are evaluating suppliers, ask whether they wrap-and-assemble in-house or outsource — in-house wrapping is the quality benchmark.

Setup boxes are non-collapsible (ship pre-assembled); magnetic boxes are collapsible rigid (ship flat).

A setup box is a non-collapsible rigid box — it ships in its assembled form and cannot fold flat. A magnetic box is a collapsible rigid box — it ships flat and snaps together in seconds at the packing station, with a magnetic front-flap closure. Setup boxes have a stronger premium signal (no fold lines, no assembly) but cost more in freight volume. Magnetic boxes are the cost-effective alternative when freight volume matters. Choose setup for retail counter and gift programs; choose magnetic for DTC ecommerce.

Pre-assembled — setup boxes do not ship flat.

Setup boxes ship pre-assembled by definition — the format is defined by being non-collapsible. Pre-assembled shipping means higher freight volume (and higher per-unit freight cost) than flat-shippable formats like magnetic or folding carton. Plan freight volume accordingly — a pre-assembled setup box takes roughly 2.5× the freight volume of a flat-packed magnetic box of the same size. For most clients, sea freight keeps the per-unit freight cost manageable.

Yes — 7–10 business days for a printed sample, 5–7 for a white sample.

We provide white samples (unprinted, exact construction) in 5–7 business days and printed samples (your artwork, finish, and color) in 7–10 business days. Sample fees are credited back against your production order. We recommend a printed sample for any project involving Pantone matching, foil, or specialty paper, because colors and finishes render differently on physical stock than on screen.

Yes — either a separate lift-off lid (two-piece setup) or an attached hinged lid.

Two options: a separate lift-off lid (the two-piece setup variant, where the lid lifts off vertically — the most traditional setup format) or an attached lid that opens on a spine hinge (the book-style setup variant). The lift-off lid is the default for confectionery and gift sets; the hinged lid is the default for counter goods and heritage products. Both are quoted at the same cost unless the hinged lid requires spine scoring.

Yes — greyboard and paper wraps are recyclable in standard paper streams.

Greyboard and paperboard are both recyclable in standard paper streams. If you choose a wrap with foil stamping or soft-touch lamination, recyclability is reduced — check with your local recycler. For brands making a sustainability claim on-pack, choose FSC-certified wrap, water-based lamination, and skip foil. We supply chain-of-custody documentation for all FSC-certified projects.

10–15 business days after sample approval.

Standard production runs 10–15 business days after sample approval. Setup boxes are comparable in lead time to other rigid formats — the wrap-and-assemble cycle is well-established. Air freight (5–7 days) is available for urgent launches; sea freight (28–35 days) is standard and most economical. Sample production runs in parallel with the first week of bulk production.
