Quick Buyer Answer

A two piece box is packaging made of two separate parts: a base tray and a lid that lifts off vertically. The lid skirt slides down over the base sides and holds by friction fit — no magnets, hinges or adhesive needed. In the XC Paperbox catalog it comes in two variants. The rigid variant uses 1.5–2.5mm greyboard wrapped in art or specialty paper and is part of the rigid box family (this is also what a "setup box" refers to when pre-assembled). The folding variant uses 300–400 gsm SBS paperboard and ships flat. Whatever the material, the lid always comes fully off — this is what separates a two piece box from magnetic (front flap stays attached) or drawer (slides out) boxes. Two piece boxes suit confectionery, apparel, stationery and gift sets where the lid should lift off completely. MOQ is 100 units for rigid, 500 for folding. White samples take 5–7 business days and printed samples 7–10 days. Customization covers dielines, CMYK or Pantone print, foil, finishes and inserts. We ship DDP to 50+ countries. What Is a Two Piece Box?

A two piece box is defined by its construction, not its material. It pairs a base tray with a separate lid that lifts straight up and off. The lid slides over the base sides and holds in place by friction — the tightness of the fit is engineered at the wrap stage so the lid seats securely without falling off and opens easily without a tool. The lid is a full-telescope or partial-telescope fit. A full telescope lid covers the entire base, so a closed box reads as one solid form — the premium default for gift sets and presentation. A partial telescope lid (tray/cap lid) covers only the top portion, leaving a section of base visible — common for confectionery and stationery. Both are available; you specify the preference in the brief. Because the structure is base plus lid, a two piece box can be made in either a rigid or a folding build. The rigid build (greyboard, wrapped, pre-assembled) is a member of the custom rigid box family. The folding build (paperboard, flat-ship, erects at the packing station) is a lower-cost, lower-freight-volume alternative for high-volume retail. At our factory we produce both on dedicated lines, with hand QC at the wrap and assembly stage to keep lid fit and print registration consistent.

Two Piece vs Other Rigid Boxes

A two piece box is one construction within the rigid box family — when built rigid, it is a rigid (set-up) box with a lift-off lid. The comparison below positions two piece against the other rigid formats in the catalog.

Two Piece vs Setup Box

No — they are not synonymous, although they overlap. In the XC Paperbox taxonomy, two piece describes a construction (a base plus a separate lift-off lid), while setup box describes a format (a pre-assembled rigid box that arrives ready to fill, not flat). These are two different dimensions, so a box can be one, both, or neither:
  • Two piece, folding: a base with a separate lid built from 300–400 gsm paperboard. It is a two piece box but not a setup box, because it ships flat and erects at the packing station.
  • Two piece, rigid: a base with a separate lid built from greyboard, wrapped and pre-assembled. This is both a two piece box and a setup box.
  • Setup, hinged lid: a pre-assembled rigid box whose lid opens on a spine hinge (the book-style setup variant). This is a setup box but not a two piece box, because the lid does not lift off.
So the practical rule is: most premium two piece boxes are also setup boxes, but the two terms describe different things. Use "two piece" when you need the lid to come fully off; use "setup box" when you need the pre-assembled, ready-to-fill premium delivery. This is the same relationship the industry uses — setup box is the traditional term for a pre-assembled rigid box. Our custom setup boxes cover both lid options.

Two Piece vs Magnetic

The two formats differ in how the box opens. A two piece box has a separate lid that lifts straight up and off — the classic lift-off opening. A magnetic box has a front flap that folds over and closes with concealed magnets; the lid stays attached to the back. For purchasing, the differences are threefold:
  • Interaction. Two piece exposes the product fully and stays open — right for a on-display gift set. Magnetic opens and closes repeatedly during unboxing — right when the customer will reopen it often.
  • Complexity & cost. Two piece is mechanically simple (friction fit) with no hardware, but the rigid variant is hand-wrapped. Magnetic adds magnet insertion cost but ships flat, cutting freight volume versus a pre-assembled two piece of the same size.
  • Presentation. Two piece shows product on the base with no hinge in the frame — clean to photograph. Magnetic shows the flap behind the product.
If the lid must come fully off, choose two piece. If you need a premium box that ships flat and reopens repeatedly, choose magnetic.

Materials

Two piece boxes are built around a structural core and a facing material. For the rigid variant the core is greyboard: 1.5mm for lighter items (stationery, confectionery), 2mm as the standard, and 2.5mm for weighty gift sets. Greyboard is 80% recycled by default and FSC-certified available. For the folding variant the core is 300–400 gsm SBS paperboard, the cost-down choice for high volume. The facing is the wrapping paper, which carries the print and the feel:
  • Art paper (128–300 gsm) — the baseline printed wrap; 157 gsm is the sweet spot and takes CMYK, Pantone, foil and lamination cleanly.
  • Specialty paper (Curious, Fedrigoni, Gmund) — for brands where the paper itself is the statement; tactile, colored or metallic stocks that need no print.
  • Textured stocks (linen, leather, kraft) — add a tactile surface that photographs well.
  • FSC-certified wrap — required if you make a sustainability claim on-pack.
Board thickness and paper choice drive structure, feel, cost and print quality together: thicker greyboard makes a weightier, more robust box but raises cost; a specialty or textured wrap raises the premium signal and the per-unit material cost but reduces the printing requirement. We do not publish a default greyboard thickness list because every project is sized to its product weight and target cost. For the full material and structure picture, see our Custom Rigid Box Cost Guide.

Printing & Finishes

Separate your structure decision from your decoration decision — they are quoted independently. Structure (board, wrap, build) determines the box itself; decoration is printed or applied decoration on top. Printing options we actually offer on rigid two piece: offset CMYK (economical from 500+ units, full-color photographic work), Pantone spot colors (brand-critical color matches), digital print (100–500 unit runs, no plate setup, ideal for seasonal launches), metallic inks (shimmer without foil-stamp cost), and litho lamination (the printed sheet wraps the whole exterior including edges — standard for rigid two piece). The folding variant adds flexo print at 5,000+ units for low-cost single-color branding. Finishes: soft-touch lamination (velvet feel), matte or gloss lamination, foil stamping (gold, silver, rose gold, holographic), embossing & debossing, spot UV on matte grounds, ribbon-tie closure (satin, grosgrain, organza), velvet flocking and fabric inlay, and printed inner lid liner. Each finish adds a pass and a modest per-unit cost, so budget for the two or three that matter most to your brand. For the capabilities and options, see our Custom Packaging with Logo solution.

Inserts

Two piece boxes accept custom inserts that hold your product and present it the moment the lid comes off. These are the insert options we actually produce: die-cut cardboard inserts (most economical, good for sets of multiple items), EVA foam inserts (precision-cut for individual bottles or devices), vacuum-formed plastic trays (food-safe, common for confectionery), and velvet flocking (luxury interior for jewelry and watches). Insert cost depends on material and complexity — from a minimal per-unit cost for die-cut cardboard to a meaningful per-unit cost for EVA foam or vacuum-formed tray and the most for velvet flocking. Choose based on product weight and the unboxing moment. Because inserts are sized to the real product, send the dimensions of each item and we engineer the insert layout around it.

Cost: What Drives the Price

There is no flat price list because every two piece box is custom. The factors that move the price are: dimensions (larger boxes use more greyboard and wrap and lower units per sheet), board (1.5–2.5mm rigid or 300–400 gsm folding; rigid costs roughly 2–3× the folding variant per unit), quantity (unit cost drops sharply from 100 to 500 to 1,000 units as setup and tooling amortize), wrapping (art paper baseline; specialty papers add 20–40%, textured stocks 30–50%), printing (digital at low volume, offset from 500+), finishing (soft-touch, foil and embossing each add a pass), insert, and shipping (pre-assembled rigid ships at higher freight volume; folding ships flat). We do not publish a single USD list price because the configuration is never static across buyers. Instead we show the unit cost at 100, 500, 1,000, 5,000 and 10,000 units in your tailored quote within 24 hours, so you can see the volume curve before committing. For the pricing mechanics that apply across rigid formats, read our Packaging Pricing Center and our Custom Rigid Box Cost Guide.

MOQ

The minimum order quantity for fully custom two piece boxes is 100 units per SKU for rigid and 500 units for folding. This is the real MOQ from the product definition — it is not borrowed from the generic rigid box MOQ (50 units), because the folding variant carries a higher threshold for flat-ship economics. MOQ is applied per SKU, so multiple sizes raise the total order even if each design is small. Artwork likewise does not change the MOQ itself, but it affects the print economics: at 100 units we run digital printing, which avoids plate setup costs; from 500 units offset printing becomes more economical per unit. If you need fewer than 100 units, order a sample or a small pilot — we run smaller quantities as a sample or pilot program. For a general MOQ framework across formats, see our Packaging MOQ Guide.

Two Piece Box Applications

Based on the industries to which our two piece boxes are mapped, here is where the format is a common choice. Chocolate and confectionery appear here as secondary packaging — the outer gift or presentation box — rather than as a primary product container.

Frequently asked

A two piece box is packaging made of a separate base tray and a lid that lifts straight up and off, holding by friction fit.

The lid slides over the base sides and stays seated by its own tension — no magnets, hinges or adhesive. It can be rigid (greyboard, pre-assembled) or folding (paperboard, flat-ship). The lid always comes fully off, which distinguishes it from magnetic and drawer boxes.

It can be — the rigid build is a member of the rigid box family; the folding build is not.

The term "two piece" describes a construction (base + separate lift-off lid), not a material family. When built from 1.5–2.5mm greyboard and wrapped, it is a rigid box. When built from 300–400 gsm paperboard, it is a folding box. Rigid two piece boxes are also setup boxes when shipped pre-assembled.

Two piece is a construction (base + lift-off lid); setup box is a format (pre-assembled rigid).

A rigid two piece box that is pre-assembled is both. A folding two piece box is not a setup box because it ships flat. A setup box with a hinged lid is a setup box but not a two piece box. Use "two piece" for the lift-off construction; "setup box" for pre-assembled rigid delivery.

Choose two piece for a full lift-off lid; choose magnetic for a flap that reopens often and ships flat.

A two piece box has a separate lid that lifts off completely; a magnetic box has a front flap that closes with concealed magnets and stays attached. Two piece shows the product fully and is heavy premium; magnetic reopens repeatedly and ships flat, cutting freight volume.

Greyboard (1.5–2.5mm) for rigid, or 300–400 gsm SBS paperboard for folding, wrapped in art or specialty paper.

Art paper (157 gsm typical) is the baseline printed wrap. Specialty stocks (Curious, Fedrigoni, Gmund) and textured stocks (linen, leather, kraft) raise the premium signal and material cost. FSC-certified wrap is available for sustainability claims. 80% recycled greyboard is standard.

100 units per SKU for rigid, 500 units for folding.

MOQ is applied per SKU, so multiple sizes raise the total order. At 100 units we run digital printing (no plate setup); from 500 units offset printing is cheaper per unit. Smaller quantities are available as samples or pilot programs.

Pricing is custom and depends on dimensions, board, quantity, wrapping, printing, finishing, insert and shipping.

Rigid costs roughly 2–3× the folding variant per unit. We do not publish a flat USD list price; we show unit cost at 100, 500, 1,000, 5,000 and 10,000 units in a tailored quote returned within 24 hours.

Yes — die-cut cardboard, EVA foam, vacuum-formed trays and velvet flocking.

Die-cut cardboard is most economical; EVA foam and vacuum-formed trays are meaningful-per-unit costs; velvet flocking is the most expensive. Insert choice depends on product weight and the unboxing moment.

Confectionery, apparel, stationery, gift sets and corporate presentation where the lid should come fully off.

Based on our product and industry data, the format maps to confectionery and chocolates, premium retail gift sets, apparel and fashion accessories, stationery and notebooks, corporate gifting, holiday sets and PR/influencer kits. Cosmetic, jewelry and gift industries also use it for rigid presentation.

Yes — we ship DDP to 50+ countries.

Air freight runs 5–7 days; sea freight 28–35 days is standard and most economical. Rigid two piece ships pre-assembled at higher freight volume; folding two piece ships flat. DDP covers USA, Canada, Germany, France, UK, Italy, Spain, Australia, Japan, South Korea, Singapore and Malaysia with no surprise customs fees.
