Overview

What it is, and when to use it.

Custom pillow boxes are a unique folding carton format with curved, tuck-end closures that give the box a soft, pillow-like silhouette. Unlike rectangular boxes with rigid lids, pillow boxes are cut from a single flat sheet, scored along curved lines, and folded into a three-dimensional shape that holds itself closed with interlocking end flaps. The result is a package that looks sculptural, opens easily, and costs less to produce than a rigid box — making it a favorite for event favors, wedding giveaways, jewelry presentation, and seasonal retail promotions. Pillow boxes are printed flat on one side of the sheet (typically 250–400 gsm paperboard), then die-cut to the curved shape and scored for folding. They ship flat and pop into shape in seconds, so warehousing and shipping costs are minimal. The curved profile photographs well and feels more intentional than a standard rectangular carton, which is why brands use them for social-media-worthy unboxing moments. We manufacture pillow boxes in low MOQ runs starting at 100 units per SKU, with digital proofs in 3–5 business days and production in 7–12 business days. Every project runs on a dedicated production line in our FSC-certified facility in Foshan, China, with hand QC at the packing stage.

Buyer's decision framework

When to choose custom pillow boxes — and when not to.

Pillow boxes are the right call when you need decorative, sculptural packaging at a folding-carton price point. They are the wrong call when you need heavy-load protection, retail-shelf-ready gluing, or a format that stacks efficiently. Walk through these four questions before you commit.

  1. 1

Is the visual shape more important than stacking efficiency?

Pillow boxes are curved — they look beautiful on a table but do not stack as neatly as rectangular cartons. If your boxes will be displayed individually on tablescapes, retail counters, or in social media photos, the curved shape is an asset. If they need to stack in pallets and on shelves, choose a rectangular folding carton or rigid box.

  2. 2

    What is the product weight?

Pillow boxes are best for lightweight items under 300g — jewelry, confectionery, small cosmetics, candles. For heavier items, the tuck-end closure may not hold securely and a rigid box with a lid is a better choice. If your product is above 300g, we recommend a small rigid box or a folding carton with a crash-lock bottom.

  3. 3

What is your budget per unit?

Pillow boxes are one of the most cost-effective decorative packaging formats. At 500 units, expect to pay significantly less than a rigid box of similar size. If your budget is very tight, a plain rectangular carton is cheaper. If the box is part of the gift and will be photographed, the pillow shape delivers outsized visual impact for the cost.

  4. 4

Will the box be opened and closed repeatedly?

Pillow boxes use tuck-end flaps that are designed for single-use or limited re-opening. For repeated use (refill systems, keepsake boxes), choose a rigid box with a magnetic or hinged lid instead. For one-time event use, pillow boxes are ideal.

Materials

Board & paper options

  • 250–400 gsm coated paperboardThe standard substrate for pillow boxes. 300 gsm is the sweet spot for most applications — rigid enough to hold shape, flexible enough to fold cleanly. 250 gsm suits lightweight items like jewelry; 350–400 gsm suits heavier items like candles and bath products.
  • Kraft paperboardFor eco-conscious brands. Natural brown or bleached finish, pairs with soy-based inks. The uncoated surface gives a rustic, artisanal feel that works well for organic cosmetics, handmade candles, and farm-to-table confectionery.
  • Specialty paper (metallic, pearlescent)For event and wedding packaging where the paper itself makes the statement. Pearlescent stocks reflect light and photograph beautifully; metallic stocks add a celebratory shine without foil stamping.
  • FSC-certified paperboardRequired if your brand makes a sustainability claim on-pack. We supply FSC-certified paperboard and chain-of-custody documentation.
  • Recycled-content paperboardPost-consumer recycled content from 30% to 100%. The slightly flecked surface is part of the aesthetic for eco-conscious brands.

Printing & finishes

How it gets dressed

Printing

  • Offset CMYKRecommended for 500+ units and full-color photographic artwork. Lowest per-unit cost at volume. The curved die-cut shape prints cleanly with offset registration.
  • Pantone spot colorsRecommended for brand-critical color matches. With a simple single-color design, pillow boxes can achieve a premium look at a fraction of the cost of full-color printing.
  • Digital printRecommended for 100–300 unit runs. No plate setup, fast turnaround. Ideal for event-specific batches and seasonal promotions.
  • Foil stampingRecommended for wedding and luxury event packaging. Gold, silver, rose gold, or holographic foil on the front panel creates a premium unboxing moment.
  • White ink on kraftRecommended for eco-conscious brands using kraft paperboard. White ink creates contrast on dark surfaces without the cost of coating.

Finishes

  • Matte or gloss lamination
  • Soft-touch lamination
  • Foil stamping (gold, silver, rose gold)
  • Embossing & debossing
  • Spot UV on matte grounds
  • Die-cut window for product visibility
  • Ribbon tie closure

Ordering & pricing

MOQ, lead time, and what drives the unit cost.

Every box is custom — there is no flat price list. Here is what you need to plan around, and what we will confirm in your tailored quote within 24 hours.

MOQ & sampling

Our standard MOQ for custom pillow boxes is 100 units per SKU. At 100 units we run digital printing, which avoids plate costs and lets you test a market or produce a single-event batch. From 500 units, offset printing becomes more economical. Sample fees are credited against your first production order.

Lead time

Sampling: digital proof in 3–5 business days, physical sample in 5–7 days. Production: 7–12 business days after sample approval. Shipping: 10–25 days DDP to 50+ countries, depending on destination and freight method. Total door-to-door: 2–4 weeks for most orders. Rush production is available on request.

How to read pricing

Final pricing is confirmed in your tailored quote within 24 hours. We do not publish a flat price list because every pillow box is custom — but we will always show the unit cost at 100, 500, 1,000, and 5,000 units so you can see the volume curve before committing.

What affects the unit cost

Seven factors that move the quote.

  • Order quantity

Unit cost drops from 100 to 1,000 units as setup and die-cutting costs amortize. Beyond 1,000, savings continue but flatten.

  • Box size

Larger boxes use more paperboard and fewer units fit per press sheet. A 320×100×100mm box costs roughly 2× a 100×40×40mm box.

  • Paper weight

300 gsm is the baseline. 350–400 gsm adds material cost. Specialty papers (pearlescent, metallic) add 20–50% to the paper cost.

  • Printing method

Digital print is economical at 100–300 units. Offset CMYK and Pantone spot become cheaper per unit from 500 units. Foil stamping adds a fixed setup cost.

  • Finishes

Soft-touch lamination, foil stamping, and spot UV each add a pass. A simple matte-laminated pillow box is the most cost-effective option.

  • Die-cutting

The curved die-cut shape requires a custom die, which is a one-time setup cost. The die is reusable for reorders.

  • Shipping

Flat-pack shipping keeps freight costs low. Pillow boxes are lightweight and compact when flat — sea freight is economical from 500 units.

Real project

A wedding planner's favor box program.

Custom Pillow Boxes real project example
Client
Wedding and event planning company (representative example)
Challenge
A wedding planning company needed 500 favor boxes for a luxury destination wedding. The boxes had to hold delicate macarons and a small jewelry piece, photograph beautifully on tablescapes, fit within a tight event timeline, and stay within a per-unit budget that made sense for a one-time event order.
Format chosen
Pillow box in 300 gsm pearlescent white paperboard, rose-gold foil monogram on the front panel, soft-touch lamination. No window — the macarons were placed inside with tissue paper. 180×60×60mm. Die-cut and scored, shipped flat, assembled on-site by the wedding team.
Result
The pearlescent stock caught candlelight on the tablescapes and photographed well in the wedding album. The rose-gold foil monogram matched the wedding color palette. The client ordered a second batch for a different event within 3 months. The per-unit cost was significantly lower than the rigid favor boxes they had used previously.

Frequently asked

Questions about custom pillow boxes.

Browse our FAQ center

100 units.

Our standard MOQ for custom pillow boxes is 100 units per SKU. At 100 units we use digital printing, which avoids plate costs. From 500 units, offset printing becomes more economical per unit. Because pillow boxes are die-cut from a single sheet, the setup is simpler than rigid boxes — making them a good choice for lower-budget launches.

Interlocking tuck-end flaps.

Pillow boxes use curved tuck-end flaps that interlock to hold the box closed without glue, magnets, or tape. For heavier items (above 200g), we recommend adding a small adhesive dot or ribbon tie for extra security. The interlocking design is reliable for lightweight items like jewelry, confectionery, and small cosmetics.

Flat — pop into shape in seconds.

Pillow boxes are die-cut and scored, then shipped flat. They pop into a three-dimensional pillow shape in under 5 seconds with no glue or tape required. This keeps shipping and warehousing costs low — ideal for event planners and brands storing inventory for seasonal launches.

Pillow boxes have a curved, sculptural shape; folding cartons are rectangular.

A pillow box is a specific die-cut shape with curved sides and tuck-end closures — it looks like a pillow when folded. A standard folding carton is rectangular with straight edges and tuck-top or crash-lock bottoms. Pillow boxes are more decorative and event-oriented; folding cartons are more utilitarian and retail-oriented. Both are made from single-sheet paperboard and are recyclable.

Digital proof 3–5 days, production 7–12 days.

After design sign-off, a digital proof is produced in 3–5 business days. A physical sample follows in 5–7 days. Production runs 7–12 business days after sample approval. Total door-to-door: 2–4 weeks for most orders. Rush production is available on request.

Yes — fully recyclable in paper streams.

Pillow boxes are made from single-material paperboard and are fully recyclable in standard paper recycling streams. By choosing FSC-certified paperboard and water-based inks, they meet the highest sustainability standards. We supply chain-of-custody documentation for brands making on-pack sustainability claims.

Yes — die-cut window with film or open.

A die-cut window on the front panel lets customers see the product inside without opening the box — popular for confectionery, bath products, and jewelry. We can add a PET film window for product protection or leave it open for a tactile experience. The window is die-cut in the same pass as the box shape, so there is no additional setup cost.

300 gsm for most uses; 350–400 gsm for heavier items.

250–300 gsm is ideal for lightweight items like jewelry, confectionery, and small cosmetics. 350–400 gsm is recommended for heavier items like candles, bath bombs, and multi-piece gift sets. We will recommend a paper weight based on your product weight and target cost.
