Overview

What it is, and when to use it.

Custom takeaway paper bags are designed for restaurant delivery and food carry-out — the bag is built to carry hot food, resist grease soak-through, and brand the restaurant from kitchen to customer. Takeaway bags are built from 100–200 gsm grease-resistant kraft paper (food-grade, FDA-compliant for direct food contact) with a flat paper handle (the standard for food service). The format is the restaurant delivery standard — the bag that the delivery driver carries from the kitchen to the customer's door, and the bag that the customer carries out of the restaurant. Takeaway bags differ from general kraft bags (which are not grease-resistant) and from SOS grocery bags (which are not optimized for hot food). We manufacture takeaway bags from 100 units, with white samples in 5–7 business days and printed samples in 7–10 days. Every project runs on a dedicated line in our 18,000 m² FSC-certified facility in Foshan, China.

Buyer's decision framework

When to choose takeaway paper bags

Takeaway bag construction is the right answer when the bag must carry hot food, resist grease soak-through, and brand the restaurant from kitchen to customer. The format is the restaurant delivery standard.

  1. 1

Is the bag for restaurant delivery or food carry-out?

Yes — takeaway bags are the format for restaurant delivery, takeout, ghost kitchens, and food carry-out. If the bag is for non-food retail, choose kraft bags (lower cost, not grease-resistant). If the bag is for grocery, choose SOS bags (block-bottom, stands on its own).

  2. 2

Does the bag need to carry hot food (above 60°C)?

Yes — takeaway bags are built from grease-resistant kraft that handles hot food up to 90°C. For steam-heavy applications (dumplings, hot soup, steamed buns), choose a takeaway bag with a vent hole to release steam and prevent condensation.

  3. 3

    Grease-resistant, PLA-lined, or PE-lined?

Grease-resistant for most takeaway food (surface treatment, recyclable). PLA-lined for eco-positioned restaurants (compostable, full grease barrier, higher cost). PE-lined for very oily cuisine (fried chicken, burgers with sauce — full grease barrier, lower cost than PLA, not compostable).

  4. 4

    Flat handle or SOS block-bottom?

Flat handle for restaurant carry-out and delivery (lighter, more cost-effective). SOS block-bottom for catering and large orders (stands on its own, opens automatically, larger format). Some takeaway bags are SOS format — specify your priority when ordering.

Materials

Board & paper options

  • 100–200 gsm grease-resistant kraft paper (food-grade)The standard for takeaway bags. Grease-resistant treatment prevents oil soak-through from fried food, burgers, and oily cuisine. FDA-compliant for direct food contact. 150 gsm is the sweet spot.
  • PLA-lined kraft paper (compostable)For eco-positioned restaurants. PLA (polylactic acid) lining is compostable in industrial facilities and provides a grease-resistant barrier. Higher cost than standard grease-resistant kraft but supports compostability claims.
  • PE-lined kraft paper (grease-proof)For very oily cuisine (fried chicken, burgers with sauce). PE (polyethylene) lining provides a full grease barrier. Not compostable but fully grease-proof. Lower cost than PLA-lined.
  • Recycled kraft paper (100% post-consumer, grease-resistant)For eco-positioned restaurants. Recycled kraft with grease-resistant treatment. Slightly lower print quality but supports the eco story. FSC-certified available.
  • FSC-certified grease-resistant kraftRequired if your restaurant makes a sustainability claim. We hold FSC license A000511 and supply chain-of-custody documentation.
  • Flat paper handle (food-grade attached)The standard handle for takeaway bags. A flat paper strip glued to the inside of the bag top. Food-grade adhesive. Supports 2–3 kg loads (typical takeaway order).

Printing & finishes

How it gets dressed

Printing

  • Flexo print (direct, food-safe ink)Recommended for high-volume restaurant chains (5,000+ units). Lowest cost for logos, handling instructions, and single-color branding on bare kraft. Food-safe ink.
  • Offset CMYK (food-safe ink)Recommended for 1,000+ units and full-color photographic artwork. Lower per-unit cost at volume for premium branded takeaway.
  • Digital print (food-safe ink)Recommended for 100–1,000 unit runs. No plate setup, fast turnaround, ideal for restaurant launches and ghost kitchen market tests.
  • Pantone spot colors (food-safe ink)Recommended for brand-critical color matches (logo reds, brand blues) where CMYK cannot reproduce a corporate color.
  • Metallic inks (food-safe)Recommended for shimmer effects without foil-stamp cost. Subtler than foil, good for backgrounds and patterns.
  • No print (bare kraft)Recommended for eco positioning and cost-down. The natural kraft is the finish. Lowest cost and strongest eco statement.

Finishes

  • Grease-resistant treatment (food-grade, standard)
  • PLA lining (compostable, food-grade)
  • PE lining (grease-proof, food-grade)
  • Aqueous coating (eco, water-based)
  • Flat paper handle (food-grade attached)
  • Reinforced handle attachment
  • Bottom gusset (for food box stability)
  • Vent hole (for steam release)

Ordering & pricing

MOQ, lead time, and what drives the unit cost.

Every bag is custom — there is no flat price list. Here is what you need to plan around, and what we will confirm in your tailored quote within 24 hours.

MOQ & sampling

MOQ is 100 units per SKU for digital print, 500 units for flexo print. We can run smaller quantities as a sample or pilot program — ask us.

Lead time

Standard lead time is 10–15 business days after sample approval — fast because takeaway bags are machine-converted. Flexo-printed bags run faster (10–15 days). For restaurant launches, book 6–8 weeks ahead. Air freight (5–7 days) and sea freight (28–35 days) are both available.

How to read pricing

Final pricing is confirmed in your tailored quote within 24 hours. We do not publish a flat price list because every takeaway bag is custom — but we will always show the unit cost at 100, 500, 1,000, 5,000, and 10,000 units so you can see the volume curve before committing.

What affects the unit cost

Seven factors that move the quote.

  • Paper type

    Grease-resistant kraft adds a modest per-unit cost at 5,000 (standard). PLA-lined adds a modest per-unit cost at 5,000 (compostable). PE-lined adds a modest per-unit cost at 5,000 (grease-proof). Recycled kraft adds 10–20%.

  • Paper weight

100 gsm for small single-meal bags. 150 gsm standard. 200 gsm for large catering bags. Higher weight = stronger bag but higher cost.

  • Handle attachment

Standard glued flat handle no additional cost. Reinforced handle attachment (stapled or double-glued) adds a minimal per-unit cost for heavy catering loads.

  • Vent hole

Vent hole for steam release adds a minimal per-unit cost. Required for steam-heavy applications (dumplings, hot soup, steamed buns). Prevents condensation and bag weakening.

  • Print method

Flexo for 5,000+ units (lowest cost). Offset for 1,000+ units. Digital for 100–1,000 units. No print (bare kraft) for eco positioning and lowest cost.

  • Construction

Standard flat-bottom no additional cost. SOS block-bottom adds a minimal per-unit cost (stands on its own). Side gusset adds a minimal per-unit cost.

  • Volume

    Per-unit cost drops sharply from 100 → 500 → 5,000 units, then gradually to 50,000. At 10,000+ units flexo-printed takeaway bags are the lowest-cost food-grade carrier.

Real project

A ghost kitchen's delivery bag program

Custom Takeaway Paper Bags real project example
Client
Ghost kitchen (representative example)
Challenge
A ghost kitchen operating 5 virtual restaurant brands needed a delivery bag that would carry 2 kg of hot food (burgers, fries, drinks), resist grease soak-through through a 30-minute delivery window, print a generic ghost-kitchen logo (not brand-specific), and stay within a tight per-bag budget at 20,000 units.
Format chosen
Takeaway bag in 150 gsm grease-resistant brown kraft, 220×120×280mm. Flexo single-color print (ghost kitchen logo + "Thank you" tagline). Standard flat-bottom. Reinforced glued handle for 2 kg load. Bottom gusset for food box stability. No vent hole (burgers and fries, not steamed).
Result
The grease-resistant kraft prevented oil soak-through from burgers and fries through the 30-minute delivery window. The flexo single-color print delivered ghost-kitchen branding at the lowest per-unit cost. The format scaled from 5,000-unit pilot to 20,000-unit steady state at a per-unit cost that met the ghost kitchen's delivery budget target.

100 units.

Our standard MOQ for custom takeaway bags is 100 units per SKU. At 100 units we use digital print. From 1,000 units, offset print becomes more economical. For flexo-printed high-volume restaurant chains, MOQ is 500 units.

Takeaway bags are grease-resistant and food-grade; kraft paper bags are general-purpose (not grease-resistant).

Takeaway bags are built from grease-resistant kraft paper with food-grade treatment — the bag resists oil soak-through from fried food, burgers, and oily cuisine, and is FDA-compliant for direct food contact. Kraft paper bags are general-purpose (not grease-resistant) — for retail, grocery, and non-food applications. For food, always choose takeaway bags (grease-resistant, food-grade). For non-food, kraft bags are sufficient and lower cost.

Takeaway bags are optimized for hot food (grease-resistant, heat-resistant); SOS bags are optimized for grocery (block-bottom, stands on its own).

Takeaway bags are optimized for hot food — grease-resistant kraft, heat-resistant to 90°C, flat handle for carry-out, vent hole for steam release. SOS bags are optimized for grocery — block-bottom that stands on the counter, opens automatically for one-handed loading, larger format for multiple grocery items. Some takeaway bags are SOS format (block-bottom), and some SOS bags are grease-resistant — the formats overlap. Specify your priority (hot food vs grocery) when ordering.

Yes — grease-resistant kraft paper handles hot food up to 90°C.

Grease-resistant kraft paper handles hot food up to 90°C (190°F) — the standard for restaurant delivery, takeaway, and catering. For food above 90°C, choose a paperboard container (folding carton) instead. For steam-heavy applications (dumplings, hot soup, steamed buns), choose a takeaway bag with a vent hole to release steam and prevent condensation.

Grease-resistant for standard; PLA for compostable; PE for very oily cuisine.

Grease-resistant treatment is the standard — a surface treatment that resists oil soak-through for most takeaway food. PLA lining is the eco choice — compostable in industrial facilities, provides a full grease barrier, higher cost. PE lining is the grease-proof choice — for very oily cuisine (fried chicken, burgers with sauce), provides a full grease barrier, not compostable but lower cost than PLA. For most restaurants, grease-resistant treatment is sufficient.

Yes — 7–10 business days for a printed sample, 5–7 for a white sample.

We provide white samples (unprinted, exact construction) in 5–7 business days and printed samples (your artwork, finish, and color) in 7–10 business days. Sample fees are credited back against your production order. For takeaway bags, the white sample confirms the grease-resistant treatment, the handle attachment, and the bag weight capacity with hot food.

Grease-resistant kraft is recyclable; PLA lining is compostable; PE lining requires separation.

Grease-resistant kraft paper is recyclable in standard paper streams (the treatment is surface-level, not a lining). PLA lining is compostable in industrial facilities. PE lining must be separated from the paper stream — the consumer removes the PE lining before recycling. For eco-positioned restaurants, choose grease-resistant kraft (recyclable) or PLA-lined (compostable). We supply chain-of-custody documentation for all FSC-certified projects.

10–15 business days after sample approval.

Standard production runs 10–15 business days after sample approval — fast because takeaway bags are machine-converted. Flexo-printed bags run faster (10–15 days). For restaurant launches and ghost kitchen openings, book 6–8 weeks ahead. Air freight (5–7 days) and sea freight (28–35 days) are both available.
